My chewing and spitting problem caused a real disaster in my mouth. After almost five years of chewing and spitting I finally ended up at the dentist’s. Blood running down my mouth, seven treatments and enormous pain were just some of the “highlights” during my thirteen - month - long treatment. But the worst part was the bill - I had to pay 10,000 $ worth dental work, which I was just not able to. So I had to borrow the money and find some ways to lessen the catastrophe. I was a real idiot with all that chewing and spitting thing. Is there anyone who did the same thing?

You are not alone in that stupid attempt to solve your problems via food. I combined anorexic behaviour with chewing & spitting and that was awful. My parents paid a lot of money to get me a professional treatment and with the help of a whole team of specialist I managed to fight anorexia. They fixed me well, but they obviously forgot to deal with my mouth and teeth. I had to visit a dentist after three weeks. The condition in my mouth was really appalling. I had two of my molars removed at once and it was extremely painful. The next week I went to continue my treatment and the “repairs” started. My gyms were also affected - they were inflamed, all read and very painful. I couldn’t chew properly and brushing my teeth caused bleeding and sores. In order to treat this I had to undergo two minor surgeries and the treatment continued by rinsing my mouth with five different solutions. I had to take three different antibiotics to fight the inflammation. After this part of the therapy I had a break (two months) and then my dentist continued with the process. He placed seven new fillings and replaced three old since they came out during my chewing & spitting phase. All this commotion in my mouth caused numerous cankers and blisters, some of them were even filled with blood and their healing lasted very long. All in all, the treatment lasted for about thirteen months and it was painful and unpleasant. I had to pay a lot of money and I lost two of my teeth. I know what you went through and I wish you good luck with the following fight against dental problems.

| how can this happen cos wouldn't chewing your food and then spitting it out just be the same on your teeth as chewing it then swallowing. Surely it would be exactly the same. |

I would imagine this happens because people chew starchy, sugary, clingy food and forget to brush and floss their teeth. Producing too much stomach acid might contribute to the problem as well.
A little basic dental hygiene (brush after every meal, flossing and rinsing with mouthwash twice a day) goes a long way. |
