I have one embarrassing problem and I do not know where to seek for help. I am pregnant and I have developed varicose veins on my labia and legs. When I asked my gynecologist, he said it looks fine and I should not be worried. Anyway, I cannot stay cool when I see it. Can anyone help me and say could it really be normal to develop varicose veins on labia?

During my first pregnancy, I also developed painful varicose veins on my legs and vulva, especially on my right labia. It made me so much worried so I understand you. I was afraid I could have blood clots so I worked out every day. On the other hand, I was afraid these veins might rupture and harm my baby or me. These varicose veins on my labia were terribly painful, so I had to talk to someone. When I said it to my doctor, she said I will be fine and it is nothing that should make me worry. When it was the time, I went on to have an easy 1.5-hour labor and vaginal delivery. I think the veins cleared up as soon as my baby was out. After this, I worked out, doing prenatal water aerobics 2-3 times per week and prenatal yoga 1 day a week. It definitely helped me, so I would recommend the same for you. You have to know that you are not alone and it is common problem in pregnancies, but rarely does it cause some bigger problem.

I too, am pregnant (7 months, first pregnancy.) I have a painful varicose vein on my left thigh and labia/vulva. It throbs, it's swollen, and hot, and is especially sore at night. I too, went to the Dr. and was told it's normal, not to worry. I exercise everyday and elevate my feet in the eve as the pain is worse in the eve. This seems to help. I take a bath at night just before bed and sleep on my left side. It should feel a little better in the am. I just wanted to share my experience because the pain is real and I have felt it.

I have varicose veins in my labia as well, one on either side. My 3rd baby was born 4 months ago and they are still painful. My doctor says to wait longer, but I 'm not sure how long I have to wait!

This is not my specialty, but I think 4 months is way beyond how long you need to wait. I would see a vascular surgeon if I were you. I don't remember my blood volume physiology in the postpartum stage. But I do know that its analogous to cardiac output which is back to a pre-pregnant state at 6 wks postpartum. Meaning, you shouldn't still be having the vein issues at 4 months and I remember how horrible they were! You shouldn't be left to "wait" another moment. I met with a vascular surgeon when I was pregnant who said if they didn't go away they could try to sclerose them. By some fluke we thought I had bilateral inguinal hernias and I had to have them repaired when I was 7 mo pregnant. But in the OR they discovered they weren't hernias, they were in fact hugely dilated venous plexus around my round ligaments. The surgeon ligated them and that was the end of all my woes. As a physician myself, I can assure you that nobody took me seriously when I tried to explain to them how horrendous and painful there were...don't wait another day!

Has anyone had treatment for labia varicose veins? I have them also and need to find a doctor to treat them. I have had them for 5 years and can no longer wear pants due to this problem.

Hi All,

I too developed vulvar varicosities, but never felt them until after the birth of my first son, they are bad during my period. Has anyone had these remain, and then gone on to have another baby? I am wondering if my permanent pain will get even worse from them - like will I hurt all the time if I have another baby? I am sure the pregnancy won't feel terrific, I am more concerned about the permanent damage with the vein problem.

Any advice would be great, seems these are not very common!

Thanks

I am 8 months pregnant and found out yesterday that I too have varicose veins in my labia. They are, at times, painful and very uncomfortable. I feel that there is something seriously wrong with me. But my doctor tells me that it is perfectly normal and not to worry. But how can you not worry about something like this and also try to ignore the pain. He did tell me to go to a maternity store like Motherhood and get a special kind of underwear. He said they look like “granny panties” and can be somewhat uncomfortable because apparently they don’t “breath” very well but he said that this underwear will help with the pain and also any swelling. He told me to wear them during the day when moving around a lot and a night may go without underwear or loose underwear. This is the only advice I can offer and all I am doing to get through it, is taking the advice from my doctor and not worrying about it because it is “normal” and will go away almost right after the baby is born, hopefully. Very Happy

Hi, i developed labia varicose veins whilst pregnant with my son 4 years ago. I have always taken regular exercise several times a week. I found being on my feet alot whilst pregnant made them worse, a good pair of well fitted big knickers helped. My midwife suggested that I put sanitary towels in the fridge soaked in something she gave me from a health shop and from time to time during the day I wore cool, damp sanitary towels but they did help a little to calm them down .... the things us women have to do eh!! Unfortunately they have never completely gone away. I went to see a doctor a couple of years ago who told me I could have them removed but if I was to have another pregnancy the problem would likely come back. I decided to live with them as I wasn't sure if I was going to have another child or not. I noticed they are worse whilst on my period and especially if i use tampax instead of pads. I still haven't decided whether to have another child or not and I'm getting pretty fed up with them now. And men think they have it tough! Laughing

this is my 2nd pregnancy and I developed a varicose vein extending from the right labia, into the buttock and down the back of the thigh from 20 weeks.
the pain and feeling of heaviness was constant and making me feel really quite depressed. The GP was sympathetic but said she could do nothing.

After 6 weeks, in desperation to try anything, I saw a an Osteopath. something I have never tried before.
she told me that the position of my pelvis and pubic bone was contributing to the blockage and I had 2 treatments to manipulate the pelvis back into place.
the swelling has remained but the pain has subsided so much I feel like a new woman.

I really felt other women suffering this condition should know what worked for me.
