I am allergic or having reactions with vitamin c. I have not confirm yet but it has got to do with my alpha thalassemia. There are list of drugs and food that an alpha thalssemia diagnosed person should not consume and one of those are large quantity of vitamin c. Some (including me) are having reactions if they eat too much vitamin c like 500mg. I get blisters on the side of mouth, cold sores, and facial dry itchy scalling skin. And if im weak during those days i get colds, even fevers.
If you dont have thalassemia then maybe you have too much iron in the blood during that day or your body retains too much iron in the blood stream. Vitamin C helps absorb Iron. It potentiate Iron. Too much iron will cause you a lot of symptoms. thalassemic people have too much iron in the blood stream that large vitamin c consumption makes them dizzy or have those above symptoms.. some have nose bleeding..
You may find that Vitamin B complex is very helpful to you.

I have the same allergy to vitamin C and it's a family trait but I did find out from a local health food store that there are other scorces that you can get vitamin c in other forms than citric acid from corn and other forms that might not react like oranges. I would suggest to ask about vitamin c in adifferent form than the commonly known citric acid.

I have also been allergic to citric acid/vitamin C since birth. As a child I would break out in itchy whelps that look like mosquito bites if I ingested too much vitamin C. Things like Kool-Aid and oranges would cause me to break out. As an adult it seemed like the frequency and severity of this lessened but recently my symptoms have changed somewhat. Now l will occasionally get an itchy burning rash rather than whelps and along with it abdominal pain. I guess I need to start paying more attention to this and limiting my intake of C more. This condition definitely exists, I just wish I knew more about it. It's nice to see that I am not the only one with it.

I have a suspected allergy at this time to Vitamin C. I've known for years that drinking a glass of orange juice will always result in a canker sore. Without fail. So I stopped drinking it years ago.
Recently diagnosed with MS, I started to take Vitamin C supplements. Also started to eat a lot of fruits and veggies, including green pepper and onion.
Since childhood I had the mystery of geographic tongue. I never noticed back then, but I do now, with the geographic tongue, I get tongue fissures.
Began the supplements a week and a half ago. Including eating a lot of C in diet. My geographic tongue that had been gone for a long time returned, and also the tongue fissures. 1 fissure in particular was very sore. So I had a moment of enlightenment, and stopped the C supplements 3 days ago. The tongue is nearly 100% healed now. Fissures fading, geographic patches fading.
I am also a burning mouth sufferer, and when I did the Candida cleansing diet, focusing on meats and certain veggies, my burning mouth felt better.
I'm going to eliminate as much C from diet now as possible, and see if perhaps all these mouth problems can be attributed to a Vitamin C allergy. It did solve the tongue problems! Perhaps I can control the burning pain of the other.

You won't believe this but I am overjoyed to find so many people allergic to Vitamin C, ie ascorbic acid or citric acid.
My entire family is allergic to Vitamin C. My parents, my children, my grandchildren, my nephews, my siblings.
I have only found 1 physician who did not poo-poo me when I explained the allergy to them.
Recently, my sister was told to give my nephew Vitamins because he frequently catches colds. Her doctor told her there was no such thing as allergies to Vitamin C.
For those of you that need an immune booster, try cod liver oil capsules. Works for me!

I was constantly sick as a child, and my parents would always insist I take vitamin C and drink orange juice to make me feel better. I NEVER felt better after taking it, always just making me feel worse. I would develop horrible cold sores (like 20 at a time). Finally I stopped taking the vitamin C, and I stopped getting so many cold sores and stopped feeling so sick. Now, if I even have a sip of something with orange juice or take a multi vitamin with vitamin C, my mouth instantly is on fire and I break out soon afterward. I am anemic and my doctors insist I take vitamin C so that the iron can be absorbed. I am fine if I eat other fruits, so long as I don't eat too many of them. Any suggestions?

Since I was 18, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and citric acid has caused problems for me, though it took years for me to make the connection. It began with my hands when a layer of skin would slowly peel away in/around/between my fingers and run across my palm in the weeks and months to come. It hasn't done that for years, now that I limit my intake, but when I do eat something rich in vitamin C, it still causes itches like mosquito bites mostly on my fingers or toes and probably would erupt and peel from those spots if I kept eating the stuff. Also, sometimes vitamin C causes dry red spots of skin on my neck or inner elbows that don't go away unless I moisturize and hold a wet cloth against the area with a pressure bandage for 24 to 36 hours - and the spots will fade then - otherwise, there can last for months. The biggest problem, however, are such things seem to inflame nearly my entire intestinal tract, from stomach to colon. The only relief I get is from sipping water laced with Malox.
Now I have to avoid fruits (1 banana a week is about all I can handle), all fruit juices, most beverages so flavored, foods, like cereals, fortified with more than 2% vitamin C, most green vegetables, tomato sauces, etc., etc. - you know, everything I love.
I've mentioned it to doctors now and again, but they just shrug or have nothing useful to say, like they don't believe one can be sensitive to vitamin C, but when some people can actually be allergic to their own body, anything is possible. I now worry about scurvy since my gums have started hurting for no apparent reason. You might think the Internet would have a helpful suggestion, but I can't find any. All I found was this site, and some small confirmation I am not alone.

Dear All:
I was recently diagnosed as having an allergy to Vitamin C (on Friday, January 23, 2009).
I have had problems all my life with foods one would consider to be acid. When I was a child a doctor at my local hospital diagnosed me as being 'allergic to acid'.
I was even tested by an allergist in 2006 to find out what I was allergic to and when I asked him if there was such a thing as an allergy to acid he told me in no uncertain terms 'no'.
However, I continued to having problems with foods like tomatoes, oranges, grapefruits, pineapple, limes, lemons, ketchup, fruit juices, etc.
Recently, I started seeing a homeopathic doctor for some problems I was having with my stomach, as I suffered from lactose intelorance and often suffered from severe heartburn and was diagnosed with acid reflux especially when I used any of the above foods.
I started telling him about the problems I was having and asked him if there was such a thing as an allergy to acid. He also told me 'no' there wasn't, but that there was an allergy to Vitamin C. He told me that this allergy would not show up on conventional allergy tests, because it was not a food allergy, but an allergy to a 'compound' found in certain foods.
He then tested me and I turned out to be allergic to Vitamin C.
I hope this is of some help to those of you out there who are suffering.
Homeopathic remedies can help as well as the Namburad treatment the lady in a previous post was talking about, as my homeopath has suggested that I undergo it, but I need to get some other health issues cleared up first before he can start the treatment.
Good luck to all!

Dear readers,
I think we are all being misled in a way by the big drug companies in so far as they would like us to believe that pills i.e vitamins, are a one size fits all solution to our daily slog.
I have come across interesting research that is very much to the contrary and shows that some people are in fact very much "allergic" to vitamins, and don't need them at all! They fare much better on a simple diet and with loads of minerals, from which the body then creates the necessary "vitamins". Much like the body of a horse.
If you find yourself getting a cold try this. Don't take your Vitamin C or chicken soup as told in old wives tales. Take a about 3 to 7 ZINC tablets - after eating. That sorts out the cold within hours!

I have an allergy to tomatoes, and all citrus. Years ago an allergy doctor suggested I try Twinlab's Allergy C Capsules. It is buffered, corn free and made from Sago Palm. I found that I can take these without any skin reaction. Hope this helps.

I became allergic to vitamin c when I was 10 years old and was cured when I was 69 through a single kineseology treatment. It is now 10 years later and I think the allergy has returned so I will go for a treatment. My syptoms are not obvious - no hives, rash, or itch. I swell internally and develop intentinal upsets and nausea.

My grandmother is allergic to Vitamin C, but I don't get rashes or any skin problems from it.
Lots of lotions with grapefruit or certain other citrus extracts gives my skin little bumps.
If I take any pill with added vitamin C, I lose my apetite completely and feel very sick to my stomach. Even regular multi-vitamins with a lower amount of vitamin C makes me not want to eat. If I inhale any sort of citrus smells I get caught in a sneezing fit and can even have trouble breathing.
The worst time was when I made this delicious lemon bread, of course I had to try it, and of course I became overcome with a headache and a refusal to food or water. I didn't throw up, but remained sick for about 12 hours.

Hello all, I don't suffer from this myself but was curious about this and found out there is such a thing as Citric Acid Intolerance, which isn't a true food allergy but can mimic one. You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citric_acid_intolerance and in more depth here: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~vclarke/citric.html .
I also found this mention of ascorbic acid allergy:
