Hi, my son who is 12 also has a vitamin c allergy. He breaks out in hives, gets a fever, his ears, nose and eyes turn deep fire red, migraines and starts to vomit. He has suffered with this since he was 1 yrs old and I have taken him to all sorts of specialist as well. So he just avoids it and he does better. If by chance he it's something with vitamin c in it he says he feels a tingle on his tongue and he has to take a benadryl as soon as possible.

I’ve been allergic to Vitamin C since I was a baby – the doctor prescribed multi-vitamins when I was a few months old as a health booster, and I became so ill I nearly died. The medical profession would not accept my mother’s concern that it was the vitamins making me ill. The lining of my intestines was actually being stripped away. Eventually Mum stopped giving me the vitamins and I recovered.
As an adult, it took me many years to determine that it was the Vitamin C that caused the problem; and even now, at 57 years old, if I have too much (natural Vitamin C) the problem returns. My whole insides becomes painful and I get sores inside my mouth.
I do manage ok by only having small amounts of natural foods with Vitamin C. I can eat say 1 tomato a day; an orange once a week etc.
But I can’t tolerate Ascorbic acid that is in any processed foodstuff.
I’m so glad I found this site – I had previously never heard that other people have this problem.

To all those who hear that you are crazy or mental because you think you are allergic to vitamin C, take heart, you are not alone.

It looks like constant doses of Vit C could mess with the body's cortisol levels (cortisol is used to dampen immune reactions). See https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7919130. We really don't need much Vit C to prevent scurvy, so if we're eating a lot of fresh produce, supplements are probably overdoses. Who knows? Maybe the rise in autoimmune diseases is linked to Vitamin C being added to everything.
