i had my surgery jan 15th 2016 i am having choking problems as well as digestive issues.my neck is bothering me it feels stiff all the time.and when a storm is coming i suffer in pain.i thought all this time i was alone in my suffering.i cant walk, sit or stand for too long without suffering.my neck creaks and pops alot.i wake up coughing and choking several times nightly.i went out and paid top dollar for a new bed and pillows to no avail.after being rearended by a semi i must say some of these issues are better than the constant pain tremors and spasms i had prior to my surgery.my doc just tells me this is normal.i have a plate with six screws as well as bone graft from my hip.he told me to give it a year.i dont know where to turn now.

Almost four months out from C3-4-5-6-7.
I feel like there is something in my throat that shouldn't be there. Sometimes are worst than others. Sometimes I can't speak right because my throat seems to shut off.

Yes, I do. I had c3 -c7. At first, I was satisfied with the surgery. I thought it was part of the heeling process. I cant eat anything that is solid. I have to eat very slow. I have lost over 40 lbs. (may that's a good thing). But this is getting to be to much. I don't have the lump, but I do have the pain down my arm and legs. I also have the choking feeling every time I eat anything. Need answer too.
Thanks

My swallowing issues lasted until I found a great PT. He is amazing. He had me do stretches to loosen up the SM and other muscles that were interfering with swallowing. I also had cold hands issue. Within going to him 3x a week for two weeks, both issues were gone.
I had a L4-L5 pinch nerve occur 4 months after cervical anterior surgery. I am almost positive it was because they wanted me to sleep in an upright position whenever possible. By sleeping upright, it put a lot of weight on the lower spine and caused it to bulge out and pinch a nerve. I had horrible pain. I had two epidurals and it went away. I continued the PT two a week and eventually down to once a week. I went for almost a year without pain with the epidurals. One day, it came back with a vengeance. I had three epidurals with no success. I also did 3 months PT and Chiro visits. I have a bulging disc that it directly on the nerve and am scheduled for discectomy soon. I never had an issue with my lower back prior to the cervical anterior c3-c7 fusion. Afterwards, I am going to have posterior fusion as soon as the doctors agree what levels. One wants to do c3-t1 and the other wants to do c3-c5. I dont want either but I do have spinal instability so I am just been lucky so far.
Find yourself an amazing PT and a good massage person who is studying to be a PT. Within a very short period of time, you should see distinct difference. You can also internet search for cervical stretches to help release the tight muscles that were moved during surgery. Good luck

6 months after ACDF my left vocal cord became completely paralyzed and had to filled with Alloderm ( a permanent filler as a temporary filler tried first only lasted 6 wks) it's been 5 years since my surgery and now I am choking on thin liquids like water - 2 wks after surgery I felt like I couldn't swallow ( due to swelling per Dr) now ENT ordered a MBS and said problem could be coming from the ACDF!! I should learn more in the coming week! My real problem turned out to be a spinal cord meningioma which necessitates a posterior approach but my original Dr who did the ACDF didn't bother to look at the Myelogram I had right before surgery and I had the ACDF for no reason!!! Hard to believe but true!

Dear shoppergirl,
I had the same surgery and have the same feelings of something stuck in my throat, pressure (like a thumb pressing into my throat, and swallowing issues. Had a Modified Barium Swallow Study performed, which I recommend for you to have. It showed that the epiglottis is not working to help in swallowing because titanium plate is impeding the process, since it is too anteriorly placed.

I too have the same symptoms my Barium Swallow Study showed I am functioning fine. Was dilated several times in a short period of time , but this did not help either.
