Hello Dr. Gupta. I had a neurosurgeon that preformed the surgery (paid privately), but nobody seems to be listening to my symptoms. It feels like I have a piece of bagel (that I haven't chewed properly) is caught in my throat. This is almost 5 weeks later. It is beyond uncomfortable. Is this normal?!??!

More and likely Dyspasia.

I had C5 & C6 fused with plating in Feb 2016. A year later I am having major gastro and issues with my esophagus sphincter issues. I'm going in for my third barium swallow next week. Had several other tests, no answers yet. I am glad I found this post and don't feel alone with all these problems swallowing and choking. Why do our doctors not seem to understand this problem. All my doctors seem so confused and I am afraid I will choke to death before they figure it out.

Hi everyone, I am about 13 days post op. I feel like I have a phlem ball stuck in my throat, almost constantly especially after eating and sometimes drinking. I can't even raise my voice to call in the dogs without going hoarse. I sound like a bull frog.
This is my second fusion, first one 14 years ago, no issues, this one I had tons of scar tissue and he had to remove a plate he said ,not sure of all details. I will know more at Thursdays appt.

I am asking for help because I am scared of aspiration and causing permanent damage.
Also is anyone having horrible shooting pain between shoulders if you move too fast or wrong way?

Also plate removal? Isn't the plate a support? I am worried if down the road it comes to that, is our neck stable? Sorry if a silly question, but.. Worried.
I would appreciate any and all input. Should I go back on soft diet?

Thanks everyone and I am so sorry for all everyone is going through.

This is no fun

I thought I was crazy, thinking my c6-7 fusion had anything to do with my feeling of lump in my throat until seeing all of these comments, after the surgery about 4 years ago I felt a lump in my throat for a couple of weeks and then it went away, it is back now, going to an ENT on Friday to get checked out.

I am almost 6 weeks post op triple level acdf. You shouldn't be lifting more than 5lbs for the first 6 weeks. The pain will get better, you need to rest. I mean sit in a chair and get acquainted with the tv. Driving after 4 weeks is good. When you go to your post op you will probably get pt orders. The scar will go down, there is a Lot of swelling. It does get better. The worst thing for me is the medicine that gets stuck, I gag and get sick. It will get better. You need to give your body time to heal, it was major surgery. Good luck.

I had fusion using my hip bone in June 2000, titanium with screws at C4-6. Have had esophagus dilated 20 times over the years, & for years have been eating soft foods, learn to open my throat to swallow, ALWAYS a sip of water with every bite. More choking episodes lately...esophagram shows the plate pressing into my esophagus as well as osteophytes (bone spurs) below the plate obstructing esophagus--dilating will not help. Also now have 3 nodules on thyroid, waiting for biopsy, but that is hereditary. All I can say, is we weren't told before surgery what life would be like after. I've had constant pain for 27 years, surgery did not help in my case. There are never any guarantees, & unfortunately, no solution for me except to do more liquid proteins etc, & extensive daily physical therapy for all these years (I have developed a home program with the help of my physiatrist, rehab Dr).

I am 10 weeks post, my leg that my dr removed bone & marrow from, tingles from above my knee down to my ankle, I am sure this is surgery related because I did not experience any of this before my surgery, it wakes me up at note & I have to continuously roll from 1 side to tge other. I am going to talk to my ns at my next appt abt this problem. Hopefully it will fix itself in due tim, good luck to you

Call your ns & make appt about your breathing ! After 3 weeks post, I couldn't talk without shortness of breath, I still have a very respy voice & I am 9 weeks post, but my ns sent me for an xray & I had some inflammation my lungs, I also had the lump in my throat, felt like a thumb being pushed in it, but mine got worse if my anxiety kicked in, so I made my self relax & it would appear to go away, good luck to you & your recovery

Did you have any voice problems ? I am 9 weeks post , I still can't talk very loud, seems like early morning after resting my vocal cords, I can talk better, but after a few sentences, it goes back to squeaky. I have learned to stay away from carbonated drinks, this really make it worse, I have a lot of mucous also, unsure where this is comming from right now, earlier after post, I had mucous on my lungs, so steroids were given, but this seems to b an ongoing problem with a lot of us after this surgery, any advice would help , thanks & good luck
