I know that it is difficult right now yet I do promise you it will get better. My swallowing Issues I am used to now. They do get better. Use some Ice on your neck if it hurts and I would use some Vitamin E are some type of like Vasoline Lotion on that scar and massage it gently..Ice for pain an for relaxing your neck. Hang in there it I promise you will get better. I still have awful problems with use of my right arm and pain but I am able to walk and use it moderately. I am alive and do all that I can and rest when I can not do anymore due to the pain.I am so sorry that you are feeling a bit down. But again I do promise that God is never late and gives us all what we need right on time. Hang in there my friend and friends. Be Blessed and Healing Prayers sent your way.

It will get so much better I promise you :). I am used to it now and it does get better with time. The more you use it the easier it gets. Cut things up smaller and chew well. (I know that it is hard) lol due to the surgery but you will strengthen your muscles in your neck and things will get easier for you. My Best to you and to all that have went through this. I now know that it is a process and will get better.

So, I am 3 days into the recovery process of having c6-c7 fusion, and am wondering if anyone else had pain in the chest, esophogas area. Having trouble with swallowing, choking on liquids, but the ache in the middle of my chest is insane!

I am 4 months out after cervical fusion and still have difficulty with my throat, I also have a lot of phlegm. I also have difficulty swallowing, and was told this could take up to a year to go away. It is scary when I get a catch in my breath I feel that sometimes there is more going on than I know as far as these issues are concerned. Anyone else have these problems?

I had that for six weeks out and is normal as far as I know from my Doctor. It has eased with time and my surgery was c-3 all the way to c-7 with plates and screws and allograft bone(manmade). I choked on liquids for 2-3 months.

I had anterior fusion, with bolts and titanium plate as well on September 23rd, and my swallow is almost non existent. I had throat cancer,(HPV), which made me endure over 50 radiation treatments, and chemotherapy, starting in April of 2014, which caused me to have persistent lymphedema, and hardly any saliva, ever, so swallowing was already hard enough, but now after the plate insertion, I still have a completely numb right arm, from my shoulder to my fingertips, and stiffness, and aching pain in my neck, which cause migraines, and the right side of my throat, jaw, and mouth to continually cramp up. When I eat, or drink anything, some goes into my sinuses, some to my airway, and some to my stomach, which causes me to cough after every bite, or drink. I can eat let's say a pickle, and short it out of my nose three days later. I go to speech therapy, physical therapy, have had mri's, cat scans, x-rays, and barium swallow tests, and they all say everything is fine, but everything is not fine. These medical procedures since 2014 to the present have caused me major depression, anxiety, chronic pain, muscle pain, and I still cannot lift my right arm over my head, so I don't know what to think of what to do for that matter, but good luck to everybody that experiences a part of what I have gone through.

Hi...I had neck surgery Nov1....and it's coming up on. The end of January.i 4 discs affected and rebulit.screws plates and cages added. My neck feels so much better but from day one I have had a massive case of hicups and everytime I go from either sitting or laying down to a standing position I always belch (burp) which is not 100% normal for me. I was not like this prior to my surgery and I keep hoping it will go away but I'm starting to think k it may not. Why is this? Does anyone know? I also find it am checking alot ....even on Water. I have an amazing dr. I'm just wondering if this is could be caused from the anastasiaoligist and something she did? Or something the dr did? Or is it the normal? Leighsa

Yes to all of those. I'm 4 years out. My esophagus has an angle to it as a result of the C4-C6 fusion. My spinal cord Aja's a small cut in it from the bone pushing on it. I woke from surgery with both feet numb and a paralyzed left leg. The leg is back, but both feet remain numb. I also have lots of parasthesia (skin pain) on my right side and both forearms. Spinal cord damage is crazy! My bladder is now starting to fail- have to cath once or twice a day.
So yes- you are experiencing pretty common stuff after spinal surgery. I guess they say don't get too upset, as things can continue to improve up to 2 years after fusion. I have done very well. The doctor said it's a miracle I'm not on a ventilator, so I'm not complaining.

1) I have had 2 neck fusions. The first time the swallowing issues persisted 9+ months. The 2nd fusion it seemed worse immediately after surgery and my surgeon had me try Benadryl. The swelling was gone within 48 hrs and I have had relatively zero issues with swallowing since.
2) No leg issues with neck surgery, if anything the back pain I had diminished.
3) The plate is another story. Ever since the plate has been put in 2 years ago the pain is worse around the plate area. The MRI shows zero complications, x-rays show zero slippage which is great news, but does not explain the pain and discomfort. I've been getting injections to deal with the pain, but it is temporary and not a fix. Just wanted you to know your not alone.

I have a plate and fusion in the same general locations as everyone else and have the lump really bad as well. My surgery was done over 6 years ago and I still have the lump, pain and numbness as well. I was at a chiropractor for an initial vist and because of this procedure I had on my neck the chiropractor want to do a live xray first so she could see what was all involved. She found a broken screw and wouldn't touch me. None of the doctors I have seen seem to think it is an issue. I don't know what to do and have since moved to England where I am not eligible for medical benefits for quite some time. Sometimes it's really bad and other days not so bad.
