I assume most people have some weight loss after this procedure. I am curious regarding what to expect.

I am on day #1 post-op and have eaten one soft egg (caused a waterfall of blood down the back of my throat for a couple of minutes.) I had some soup yesterday and today. That wasn't as bad. That's all I have gotten down. I already have lost two pounds. While I wouldn't mind being about five pounds lighter, I don't want to continue to go at this rate for too long.

Another note, the pain medication (hydrocodone/acetomenophen) gives me such ups and downs. I am depressed and nonfunctional after about four to six hours after a dose due to severe pain. After the meds, I get a burst of energy and forget to take it easy. I am also getting moody from it. The pain is too severe to stop. I am considering taking some steroids for the pain, but do not want to impede the healing. As a physician, I can take this if I want. The studies are equivocal.

One more addition, my ENT has recommended acupuncture for the pain. She can put something in my ears if I want. I am worried that this itself will be uncomfortable. Is my ENT weird or have any of you guys heard of this?

This is what I found on acupuncture and its effects on post-tonsillectomy pain:

A study testing acupuncture in relieving post-tonsillectomy pain was a success. Post-tonsillectomy acupuncture was re-evaluated in a controlled study in 1990, which not only showed prompt alleviation of throat pain, but also reduction in salivation and promotion of healing in the operative wound.

Acupuncture is recommended as an alternative pain treatment in case of NSAID intolerance.

If you do decide to go for acupuncture, make sure the acupuncturist is experienced with a specific acupuncture scheme for the treatment of postoperative swallowing pain after tonsillectomy.

As for the weight loss after the surgery, it is completely normal and you will gain it all back as soon as you start eating normally. If you wish to keep the new weight, you would of course have to pay some attention to your food intake as well as physical activity.
