Everyone leaving posts on here should educate themselves before getting on here and leaving posts. Methadone "HAS NO LONG TERM EFFECTS ON BABIES" Some but not all babies will experience withdrawels . These withdrawels the babies have do not depend on the mothers dose. Mothers taking high doses may have a baby that has no withdrawels , or mothers on a very low dose may have a baby with bad withdrawels. But the medical proffesionals will give you the facts if you just ask. And they are the ones who tell us there are no long term affects to these babies born to mothers on methadone, and it is much safer to stay on the methadone , than to try to come of it while you are pregnant.

The person who wrote this is uneducated on addiction and must have a perfect family and doesnt know that it could be her/him. You never know when youll be injured, or just something bad happen we are all human we can only deal with so much. My son is very smart healthy along with all the other children at the clinic. so get educated and find something else to do with your time. dont judge or insult when u dont know what ur talking about.
you are ignorant and have NO place to judge ANYONE!
I have been on methadone for 2yrs as a result of a serious medical condition. I was faced with 2 choices: be on pain pills or be on methadone for my serious medical condition that causes severe pain.
I choose methadone. I am a stay at home mother with THREE college degrees. I am the BEST mommy you will EVER see! I keep a beautiful home, my son is very intelligent and sociable, and I am very happily married.
All of this is possible because I am on methadone and NOT on other pain pills. Methadone gave me my life back after being on pain meds for over a year.
I am now 7 months pregnant and on 30mg of methadone. My doctor assures me he has many other pregnant patients giving birth WITH NO SIGNS of withdrawals.
For you to say that "You don't deserve these kids." is WRONG!
I am the best damn mom out there and I live for my children.
NEVER judge another persons life until you walk a mile in their shoes.
Ignorant judgmental people like you dont deserve kids because you raise them to carry on your ignorance and judgmental ways when the world needs more caring and understanding people.
I wish you luck in your miserable judgmental ignorant life!

Reading these inserts makes me very sad. I see so many who are Methadone users on this blog - praising this legal drug. You can say what you want to - my neice lost a baby due to methadone (and she was on 80mg daily...lower than many) - carried the precious baby until time of delivery and he died - she had to deliver him dead. Unfortunately, like so many drug users on this blog - she didn't care enough about her choices to give up this DRUG even after that - now, she is pregnant again - and we just pray that God will protect this child and he will be healthy. Yes, it's a boy and he weighs 3 pounds...due in 2 months! Sadly, what kind of life will this child have - to be carried back and forth to a Methadone clinic every 2 weeks, have a mother who DOES nod off ALL the time (and no, she does not take any other drugs than the Methadone)... how unfair to this innocent child who didn't ask for any of this. Get off the drugs, and live a wonderful normal life. Methadone IS a drug - sadly enough, it's legal....for now! God Bless You all.

First of all I would like to congratulate all the other moms on here that have chosen to get off drugs and become stable, healthy, good mothers by getting help with methadone. And to all the people who are pointing their fingers and judging-I sure hope your hands are clean!!There ARE NO LONG TERM EFFECTS OF BABIES BORN TO MOTHERS ON METHADONE!!There ARE HOWEVER EFFECTS FROM USING HEROIN< COKE< ETC> during pregnancy. I am very sad to say that I was addicted to heroin and cocaine in 2005 when I found out that I was 12 weeks pregnant. I was so high that I didnt notice any of the symptoms. I only found out because I landed in the E.R.one night. After some blood work found out that I was pregnant and IMMEDIATELY stopped using and was admitted to a rehab program specificly for pregnant women where I was started on methadone. Where I learned that if I had just stopped cold turkey I likely would have lost my baby. From that point on I recieved excellent prenatal care, took vitamins, etc. At 41 weeks pregnant my labor was induced. I was on 115mg of methadone at the time. I delivered a beautiful 8lb 8oz baby girl who was PERFECTLY HEALTHY IN EVERY WAY! She SUFFERED NO WITHDRAWL symptoms at all and was able to come home after only 4 days at the hospital. She is now 2 and a half and is VERY smart for her age, VERY well behaved and "normal" in every way. When she was about to turn a year old I found out that I was pregnant again. I was still on methadone. I went through another healthy, full term pregnancy and at 38 weeks was induced due to high blood pressure. I delivered a perfectly healthy 6lb 14oz baby boy. Once again, MY BABY DID NOT SUFFER ANT WITHDRAWL SYMPTOMS and he came home after only 3 days at the hospital. I am currently a stay at home mom and I am a very good mom. Being a mother is the most wonderful and beautiful thing I have ever done and it saved my life. Methadone has made it possible for me to be where I am today. I dont sit around and nod out all day There is no time for that in my life. Methadone does not get me high, just makes me "normal".I feel blessed that methadone works for me and that I can live the life I live.My kids live a good life, are well taken care of and they are happy. They LOVE me!!! I get compliments from people about how good a mother I am. From people I know, from strangers. Just the other day a lady said to me "You can tell when childeren are well taken care of and loved and it shows in your kids." That made me feel really good, and she certainly had no idea that I was on methadone!!!!People who put us down are simply uneducated or alot of times WRONGLY educated. And probably dont care to get the correct information. Its just easier to criticize something you know nothing about!

these poor babies did not ask to be born its just another selfish act upon these parents who are users its disgusting that they are allowed to do this to a poor inoccent child i guess when there children are born they can just carry on using their methadone so they dont have to suffer the pain of withdrawal the same cant be said for these little innocent babies how bad is it that these people love the drugs more than they want a healthy child they must kow what that child will go through whe its born and they still choose to let it happen i would feel sooooooo bad knowing what i was about to let my child go through but i guess it s some parents choice it is disgusting anyway

it all depends on what dose the mother is prescribed when she is pregnant. If she is addicted to opiods, then she finds out she is pregnant, she has to take methadone so when she goes through withdrawls, she does'nt miscarry the baby. I regretfully was addicted to oxycontin when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, so I was sent to high risk pregnancy doctor's, that put me on methadone. My daughter was born, she went thruough a little bit of small tremors, and had a little bit of tightness in her limbs. But I could console her, I , her mother, was by her side the entire 10 day minimum that the hospital makes babys stay when they are born on a substance.I beat my self up for letting my baby be born on such a thing, and for even myself and my innocent baby into a situation that I had to stay in until she was born, or else I would have had miscarriage. She would calm down when I held her, and she had no problem feeding. I felt awful for having a baby born on that. But they did not give her any meds for this,If I wouldnt have been there they would have, if I would have went home for a night, I have a older son also, he was not born on this. most of the mothers that have a baby, have them and then go home and leave them for the nurses to take care of, I know that no one can make your baby comfortable and feel safe like their own mother, they need to feel your touch, and hear your voice, and feel your heartbeat when your holing them on your chest. if they would have given her any dtox meds, we would have been in the hospital for a minimum of 30 days. whenever she would get irratable, I could calm her down. not any nurse could, I am blessed that it did not have a worse affect on her, there are a lot of babies born on this, or most of the time worse drugs, that are taken is extremely high doses. And when they are born they are so uncomfortable, and they have no Idea why they feel like that. but my low dose of methadone , in the long run did save my pregnancy, And she is a healthy, active, beautiful little girl. she is 2.5 now, and boy, is she wild. I am truly blessed for this whole thing not taking a wrong turn. Not all people taking methadone are bad people, just sometimes people make mistakes, and for women, we can get pregnant, and learn our lesson while putting a little innocent life up for a whole lot of questions, is she going to be healthy, will she live. will she be okay. will I be a good mom, knowing that this is 100% my falt she was born on this, will I ever be able to tell her, and they never stop, I was in the bathroom on the floor every night, holding my pregnany belly crying, I couldnt stop, I felt awful for letting myself get into that situation, I was so scared for my baby, what I didnt know, what she might and might not go through when she was born. But everything turned out okay. So if you are an active user, please stop, for your baby, go get help, it is everywhere. My baby would not have been okay if I was an active user. remember that everyone can get help if you want to, and it is so worth it. baby's are beautiful. let them stay that way.

My grandson was born a preemie and from the moment he was born he had some breathing problems. My granddaughter caught RSV and passed it on to my 3 yr. old grandson who passed the RSV on to his baby brother.
My daughter took my 2 month old grandson to 2 hospitals to get 2 different answers on what was wrong with him. Those hospitals sent him home.
The baby wasn't getting any better so she took the baby to a Childrens Hospital who admitted the baby right away. The baby kept getting worst and ended up in ICU. The hospital said it was a serious case of RSV. If my daughter hadn't taken him to this hospital he would have died.
My grandson had to have breathing tubes and feeding tubes in him.A lot of Pain medicines and other medicines were given. After almost 2 weeks of my grandson being in the hospital on pain medicines and other medicines my grandson is hooked on drugs. The Dr's are treating him with Methadone. My grandson still don't seem right. The tubes has made his throat sore so he can't eat a lot and then he sucks a few drops of milk and starts breathing very hard again.
The hospital so far has save my grandson life but not at 2 1/2 months he is hooked on drugs which makes me so upset.
Methadone makes him sleep. Our grandson gets to come home tomorrow and we have to give him the Methadone. I feel like we are going to be drugging him up.
I worry what the side affects later in life will be from the hard drugs the hospital had my grandson on.
This has me so heart broken but at the same time I feel blessed my grandson is still here with us.

I was taking subutex (which is a form of methadone) during my pregnancy, I was sort of on a low dose, the docs told me it was likely he'd stay a week in hospital being watched and then be able to come home. Unfortunately my boy had to be put on Morphine and weened off it. I experienced when he was medicated It's not something you want your child to go through, but I stay positive and he's now out of hospital after one month and doing as expected. He is on his third night without having the morphine, and he's still feeling it, he's getting better though, I hope tomorrow night will be much better.

I found out I was pregnant after being on methadone for about 3 months and was devastated, it was obv. an unplanned pregnancy and I couldn't get my birth control filled d/t insurance problems and ended up pregnant. I was told by several different health care providers outside of the clinic I dose at, that staying on the methadone while pregnant was the best option for both me and the baby since the withdrawal can actually cause fetal death. I had to increase my dose 3 times during my pregnancy since my metabolism increased and I was experiencing withdrawal symptoms which can cause preterm labor. I ended up having my baby (my third btw, and only that was exposed to methadone) 5 and a half wks early (my first preterm delivery) after being put on meds to try to stop early contractions and early labor. He was crabby for the first month or so but no constant crying or any of the other awful things people said about these babies. He didn't have to have any supplemental opiates or anything else and I am nursing him. He did have some problems related to his prematurity (which may have been related to the methadone or may not have been???) but overall, he is doing fine developmentally and is a happy baby. I think it is really sad for people to be so judgmental about those of us who are on methadone not because we are addicts but because of pain issues. I wasn't trying to get pregnant and I didn't think abortion was an option when I had two other children already not to mention that it just isn't right for me at this time in my life (no judgment to those who choose that option however). I read on a nurses website where they were just bashing the moms on methadone and I felt awful about how they thought about moms of methadone babies. I wasn't on any other drugs during my pregnancy and the clinic I go to does UA's to make sure on a random basis. The dose I started at when I found out I was pregnant was 60mg/day and I delivered at 90mg/day, I was also allowed to split dose and I think that helped to keep my level more constant and not have as much up and down (so half in the am and half in the pm). Best wishes to those of you dealing with this situation.

I am on Methadone, and my three year old son Nathan was born addicted to methadone. Once you get pregnant to stop Methadone means you will abort, so many mothers not planning to get pregnant that are on Methadone have to keep taking the drug, or they will loss the baby! Nathan was born without his sucking reflux, therefor he had to be fed with a tube for several days. Besides this he is, and has been doing GREAT!!! Of course a mother does not choose to have a baby while on methadone, but after she becomes pregnant you cannot stop because withdrawls are soo bad you will abort your child, any one who has any questions be happy to e-mail me at _[removed]_, I am for Methadone, I know many people, including myself that owe there life to it!

I am a foster parent and have been caring for a child from the time he was 8 months old until now which is 16 months old. This child was born addicted to methadone. He suffered greatly when he was born and was on morphine. He has suffered a few withdrawals while in my home and was delayed. He is in the -3% for height and weight. He has digestive problems.
The mom has had 7 kids, all of whom were born addicted to methadone. THREE OF HER NEWBORNS HAVE DIED.
Please, if you are being prescribed methadone take a closer look into what is happening to you AND to your unborn child. Don't rely on the "OK" situations of a few which you have read here on this board. Don't think that just because a child seems to ONLY suffer for a FEW DAYS or a COUPLE WEEKS that it makes it OK to continue being on methadone. Being a mother, you should WANT to truly educate yourself on the effects of methadone on your unborn child as well as yourself.
There is help out there for you. As a mother, I know that you do not want to hurt your child either. You also would like to stay off meth, heroine or whatever. Please don't risk the health/life of your unborn child. Find a support group, go to the state to see if there are any drug programs available to you to help you get off the methadone. Do it because you are a good parent and truly love your child. Sometimes to truly love your child you have to do incredibly hard, seemingly impossible, extremely painful things. But, you CAN do it!
As for the person who originally started this post: My neighbor has adopted two children who were born addicted to methadone. One child is 9 years old and the other is a sibling who is 2 years old. Both children still suffer from painful withdrawals. Sometimes they have to stay up all night with a suffering child. I would seek professional help from a doctor who does not believe that methadone is a cure-all for people suffering from drug addiction. There are a lot of drug rehab places that are experts with methadone listed on the internet. If I were in your shoes I would call one of those drug rehab places and ask for their recommendatoins on certain doctors to speak to, what information they can give you about withdrawals in a child's life, and what questions to ask your doctor. Good luck and keep loving your kids.

I wanted to follow up on this. She is now in our home and doing really better than expected. Grown an inch, and gained weight. Outside of crying eposides and long restless nights doing fairley well. her mother still has not contacted us or gone to rehab. CPS is still hoping she will even after permenant placement of the 2 older ones. As for methodone you can saftley and should get off in the second trimester. Do the research and do not take the clinics word for it. They only get paid if you go. Not judging anyone. Just did a lot of research.

I've read a lot of bull on this site. All of the pros to methadone are either users or clinics. The cons are the people who are responsible for raising the poor babies. My grandchild was born addicted to methadone. His mom was on a very high dose. He went through painful withdrawal, no sucking reflex, very sensitive to noise and light, pitiful crying. He's tough, came through it. Now he is a healthy boy. But he does have strabismus as a consequence. Hopefully he will do well when he gets into school but studies have shown a high level of discipline and hyperactivity problems in these children. By the way, I am raising him. How many grandparents are handed this responsibility?
