I had 2 stents put in on the 15th of september and I am having them removed on the 28th they are rather uncomfortable especially immediatly after I urinate.I am still having kidney pain in my right side and will have that stone blasted on the 28th as well does anyone know the after effects of that. My dr said he had never inserted 2 stents one in each side. 8-|

I recently had a 6mm kidney stone removed surgically from my bladder. I was told before my surgery that my stone was .6mm and had moved from my kidney to my bladder. The doctor stated that he felt he could get in there and remove it with surgery. As I was being prepared for surgery in pre-op my doctor came in and stated to me that he would be putting a stent in place from my kidney to my bladder. That this would help to keep the urine flowing, lower risk of infection, keep me more comfortable (yeah right!!!!!!!!!)and that a simple in office procedure would be done for it to be removed. I was also told my surgery would be 1 1/2 hours and it was 2 1/2 hours. After my surgery I was informed by a nurse that I would be staying over night, but that my doctor would not be coming to see me before I was to leave the hospital. That it was their regular procudure to follow up with calling us to schedule an appointment for removal of the stent. She told me not to call them! When I asked when I should be hearing from them she assured me that it should certainly be within only a few days. A week past with terrible discomfort, blood in my urine, pain meds that made me vomit and not much that I could do. I could not function or work. I was so uncomfortable that at times it hurt to just breathe. I could hardly catch my breath at times and sleeping was impossible if not uncomfortable as well. After I week I called my doctors office and dealt with his snotty receptionist who after I explained my concerns she stated well ofcourse , you do have a stent in! I asked when I should be expecting to hear from them and she said normally not for atleast two weeks. No one told me I would be in this much pain and discomfort for such a long period of time. No one even asked what I do for a living and if I could function like this! Also, after looking on this website........no one said that removal of this stent would be possibly extremely painful during and after or had risks of complicaitons. I am so sick and tired of doctors and their vaugeness. They get away with their poor bedside manner and lack of concern for their patients more and more today. I had two teeth pulled two days before my kidney stones were dicovered and the oral surgeons office called on me twice to make sure that I was doing ok. When I told them that I thought this was wonderful of them they acted surprised that I would expect any less. Why is it that doctor's today cannot just have general care and concern for the health, safety, unerstanding and confort of their patients today. This doctor makes me sick and if I could I would take him to court. Then they wonder why they get sued so much!

Hello..I had laser surgery to remove stones on nov5th,they only could remove 1 stone as the laser broke down.I returned on the 19th nov and they blasted the other 2 stones.I have a stent in place with a string taped to the outside of my penis. The doctor told me I could remove it in 1 week.I have been taking Phenazo 200mg 3 times a day so it will not be uncomfortable to urinate.I also have been given Endocet to take if the pain becomes severe.I assume I will take 2 endocet about 1 hour before I pull the stent out.As long as I drink sufficient amounts of water then supposidly the stone fragments will pass. All I can say is I dont want to do this again.I have had 7 kidney stone operations in the past 10 years.Twice I have had PNL performed.Three they did with lithotrypsy.Twice the stones were manually removed with a basket. There must be something else that can be done.Special diets just dont help. All I can say is good luck.

I had surgery last tuesday to remove kidney stones. In september I found out I had an 11mm stone and it was located just below the kidney. I went thru 2 lithotripsy's which did NOTHING. After the second lithotripsy i searched the web for various home remedy's to remove the stone and tried everything from Olive oil and lemon juice to Coke and Asparagus (yes, someone is charging 39.95 for that little secret) anyhow, i found Uriflow. I called and they told me that my stone was big, but it would work, just take longer . Long story short, I took the Uriflow and it actually started disintegrating the stone immediately. I passed pieces the same day i started taking. After 3 weeks of taking, the stone broke in half, and moved all the way down the ureter to just above my bladder...and there they got stuck. (so it works, just don't reccommend using for large stones) So i had the surgery this past tuesday where they go in and laser the stone, remove the pieces with a basket and insert a stent. I was told the stent would be just fine and he would remove in his office in 6 days, he said it would come out like a "wet noodle". Well, i am getting the stent removed tomorrow morning and I am really worrying, now that i read these posts, but this past week has been horrible. had i known the stent would be this uncomfortable I would have never had the surgery. I would have continued taking the uriflow and taken my chances. I haven't left the house since the surgery, because it's so painful. I constantly feel like i have to urinate, even after i just went, and when i do go, it's so painful. I have the string attached and it's annoying. i have pulled on it a few times by accident when washing and I'm just miserable. The Doctor told my boyfriend it would be a slight discomfort and when i urinated it would cause a slight burning in my kidney but it would subside. I'm still waiting for that to happen. I too like other posters felt the doctor's bedside manners could use some brushing up on. I saw him for 5 minutes before surgerys and haven't seen him since, the operating room nurse gave me all my instructions and the doctor never even said goodbye...I'm trying to be optomistic, but it's almost a week before Christmas and i've been out of commission for too long. I'll come back tomorrow and post how the stent removal went.

Took 30 secs, no pain, just a wierd feeling in my penis, not unlike orgasm. Beat the hell out of all the other pain!

okay, i have to admit, i was worried about nothing. went in this morning to remove the stent and the above poster is right. NO pain, 30 seconds. I lost sleep last night over nothing. i will say that right now i am experiancing slight discomfort and pain on the side the stent was in, but apparantly that is normal...from the ureter swelling after it's removed. I took a pain med and i should be fine shortly!
so to all those who are worried about pain associated with removing a stent. (string attached). Don't worry, piece of cake. I still have the urgency to go and slight pain, but was told it should subside and i believe it will. will repost if any problems.

I had a stent put in on 11/16/07, It was not bad. I had a 6mm stone on the right side, I had a lithotripsy done on 11/27. That too was not bad. But this stent is driving me crazy! I go to the Dr. tomorrow and I hope he takes it out, it is very uncomfortable. It hasn't been like this the whole time, just reciently. I have had blood in my urine, Dr. gave me an antibiotic and a med called pyridium, it makes my urine look toxic! Neon yellow to orange in color YUCK!!! It leaves yellow rings in the toilet. THis has been too long. I had a stent before, it worked it's way out and I had to remove it myself, those things are long!!! Hope it never have to do this again!!! :

I'm scheduled to have lithotripsy done on Friday, and the dr said they will insert a stent then. I had no idea what a stent was, so I come here to look it up and now I'm terrified. I was under the impression that I'd have relief after the surgery and be able to stop taking the pain meds that are currently keeping me from nursing my infant daughter. How long is the stent normally left in? And just exactly what is it, and what is it's purpose?

It's purpose it to allow the particles of broken up stone to pass freely.
If you don't want it, I guess you could refuse to have it. Mine was so painful I spent two months in bed taking Pethidine. I don't think the doctors realise hoe painful they can be.

I found out last July that I had two large kidney stones equal to about an inch in size. Unfortunately they also found a very large ovarian cyst that was four inches in diameter. The kidney stones had to be put off until this January. I went to one doctor who scared me so badly that I felt I could just deal with the pain. Luckily my oncologist referred me to a wonderful urologist who wanted to first try lithotripsy before a PCNL (which the other doctor only wanted to do).
I had my procedure on 1/28/08. A stent was placed while under general anesthesia for the lithotripsy. The first week with the stent was horrible, I could only sit or lay around and finally resorted to Percocet to be able to work for only three hours. At my follow up one week later, my doctor gave me Detrol LA samples for the constant feeling of having to pee and Flomax to help the ureter to relax and allow the stones to pass more freely. Luckily both stones were not dense and were busted into dust/tiny stones.
I have since been to another follow up and on Monday will go in again to find out if my doctor will pull the stent or if I need one more lithotripsy. The stent is not bothering me nearly as much as it did in the beginning. Occasionally I'll have to sit down because it gets annoying. Sex, is out of the question, it is just too uncomfortable.
Although the stent is a really annoyance, I am SO thankful I have it. I have passed MANY stones double the size of a ballpoint pen tip. They are so jagged and hard, that if I did not have the stent in place there is no way I could even function. My recommendation, GET THE STENT.
Also, do NOT settle for just any urologist. I almost did, but I am so thankful that I was convinced not to. My doctor followed up with me like any doctor should, and explained every single part of the procedure and what to expect. As for meds, ask for samples! I filled the RX for the Detrol LA with insurance, and it was $112. One week later my doctor gave me samples that would have cost me another $112 and samples of the Flomax. And as for pain meds, they gave me Loritab but it did nothing for the kidney stone pain. I tolerate pain pretty well, but Percocet was the only med that even touched the pain.
Hope this info helps. Anyone in the Atlanta area should look up Dr. Ronald Anglade with Georgia Urology. He's wonderful! :D

I found this site before going through all this, and was a bit scared by what I read. I came back (stone free now!) to remind readers that not everyone has these problems, so don't worry!
I was diagnosed (by CT scan) with one large and several smaller stones eight weeks ago after an episode of "renal colic" when I thought I would die from the pain, and referred to a urologist, who was able to see me within the week (meanwhile my MD gave me Vicodin for pain). A week later I had lithiotripsy (shock waves to break up the stones) and a stent was put in place during the surgery. Sent home that day with Percocet and Pyridium, and it took about 5 days adjusting to the painkillers and the irritation of the stent before I could return to work. Yes, the stent is annoying, but necessary to help keep the passage open for the stones to pass, and to prevent backup of urine that can cause kidney damage. You have to keep drinking water, and you have the urge to urinate almost constantly. I had to strain my urine to see if stones were passing, and collect them for the doctor (to see what caused them). This is great fun while at work, with the neon orange urine (from the pyridium) staining everything. But I digress....
At my follow-up visit 10 days later, the KUB (kidney-ureter-bladder x-ray) showed there was still a stone in the kidney - about 1/3 the size - and there were still some in the tract, so we left the stent in another week. If they did not pass I would have another lithotripsy a week later. I must say, as irritating/annoying as the stent was, I did get more used to it as time passed, and gradually lowered my dose/frequency of painkillers, eventually down to half a Vicodin every four hours, though Pyridium was essential, every eight hours. And was glad to know that I wouldn't be having the intense pain of passing the stones. However, I was thrilled when a week later the KUB
showed no stones at all. The stent was removed that day in the urologist's office, with a local anesthetic. As someone else noted above, it was uncomfortable in the way a PAP is, and over quickly. I asked to see it, and was surprised how long it was (I have high kidneys). He asked if I wanted to keep it....NO WAY!!!
In the 24 hours after stent removal, I had occasional kidney and bladder spasms and pain, but not bad enough to need medication. Ten days later, I have some residual kidney soreness, but haven't taken a single painkiller since the stent was removed. Hope I never need another one, but glad the technology is there. Anyone who watched Al Swearingen's agonies on HBO's "Deadwood" series can see how horrible kidney stones were before they had these treatments.

My 15-year-old son is having stents removed from his bladder on Tuesday but they are going to put him out to do it. I just want to know how much pain he will be in afterwards.

My urologist told me they don't put you under for removal because the
proceedure only lasts about 3 to 5 minutes, and saves about five thousand dollars . I have to say the whole removal proceedure was not
fun. I was already quite sore and uncomfortable. The nurse took a
Q-tip and applied some gel to numb the area, then after a few minutes
the doctor pulled the stent out. It hurt. I cried. Now, three days later..
kidney still hurts, back is sore and tummy is quite upset. Called the
doctor and was told these symptoms are normal and should go away in
a day or two. Ugh!

I had surgery for a obstruction of my left renal pelvis. My Dr was amazing. everything he told me from the start was truthful. I was lucky, from what I have read some people have had bad dr's. Anyway. the surgery was not too bad. I was very sick after though. Vomiting, dizzy, and very painful. Plus I had a kidney stent and a catherter. 2 days later the catherter came out( not too bad very quick about 10 seconds). That was a huge relief for me getting that damm thing out of my penis. I left the hospital and was given percocet for the pain. The kidney stent had to be left in for 6 weeks. This was the worse part of my ordeal. The stent was very annoying. I always felt it in my bladder, was peeing every 25 minutes sometimes barley making it to the bathroom, had bloody urine and caused 2 uninary tract infections. My dr assured me it was normal and told me to just hang in there a few more weeks. The day it was to come out i was very nervous. It turned out not to be bad at all I was so glad to get the damm thing out. The worse part is the painful urination after... be prepared... burning and pain. I was told it would only last about a day, so here I am almost 12 hours after and I am hoping my next pee is not as bad as the last. i have believed everything my dr has told me so far so so I hope he is right about this
