hi any and all who are having doubts about stints (stents if spelling is wrong) im here to share my story.

when i turned 18 i had pail in my lower abdomen and groin area for a couple months thinking i had pulled something the summer before, we'll needless to that a couple months after that the pain got so bad that one night my body was fed up and decided to go on a 6 hour vomiting binge.

the next morning i was taken to an ER for my dehydration and i was checked for what i thought it was (i have a cyst on my left testicle and thought it was cancerous) so after the ER we had been taken to a hospital that told me i had a marble sized kidney stone (i forget the actual size). i get admitted and the next morning i get my super long stint, no string, put in. (before i go in it in my opinion that i believe the doctor that put it in did it wrong. ill explain why in a sec)

after the procedure i awoke in the room i was in before and had bad pains (which i dont think were normal, mind you i believe the doctor did it wrong) for about a week i was urinating blood and blood clots. i missed so much school because of it (i didnt mind though *big smiles*

skipping the two year story in which i had it in (thats right had it in two years!) thing is i had to a couple lithotrypsies (spell check) because "they" said the stone wasnt fully busted. (they just wanted more money) so in order for me to finish school without repeating my senior year i skipped all my other doctor appointments. moved out after school got a job so forth.

august of this year i developed a kidney infection (two years later! my first one. yay?) i went to the ER and got antibiotics and a CAT scan and was told to see a urologist (dr. drew delewski). set up apointments with him (hes the only one that gave me a good hand shake) when i saw him he told me that my two year stint was covered in calcium and needed to be taken out. other than that stint being bad i had not stone. yes no stone. it was gone. so i set up the removal appointment for the next month. i went under the sleepy/death gas (little inside joke with co-workers) and got laser lithotripsy (spelling?) and the old stint removed. the doctor told my dad that it looked like it was candy coated *gasp*

well when i woke up, low and behold, i had a string hanging out of me! *bigger gasp* but urination only hurt for a day and the bleeding only lasted a few hours.

today im getting the stint removed a week after it was put in. i stumbled here looking for info on how it might feel and started thinking i would share my story on it. hope its helpful to anyone worried.

any advise i have to give is dont go to a cheap hospital just cause you dont have insurance. they screwed me over (mainly mentally from the blood and blood clots.

well wish me luch on getting my string pulled =D

(dont mind the bad grammar or punctuation and things of that nature, i was in a rush =(

:-(

3 years ago I had my first kidney stones. 3 to be exact. I had a lithrotripsy done and then a stent was put in immediately after. The stent was supposed to be in for 3 weeks but I only lasted 3 days with it. The pain from it was so unbearable that it was making me vomit alot. I could hardly stand up straight because it was so bad. I vowed then to never have another stent in again.

Well In late August of this year it was found that I had 2 large stones again. One was 9mm and the other 12mm. So second week of September I had another lithrotripsy done. No stent needed. Woo hoo. But October 9 I was in extreme pain in my side. It was found that I had a fragment of one of the stones causing an obstruction in my kidney. So a stent had to be placed :-( .

This is my 5th day with it and I am ready to demand the doc take it out. I cannot last another 10 days with it. I feel the need to pee every 5 minutes. Even after I just go, in about 10 seconds I feel I have to go again. The burning after I go, Im getting used to it. But its wearing me out to have to run to the bathroom every 5 mins. And 90 percent of the time I dont have to go. So I have been trying to hold it in for at least an hour to hour and a half so at least its a stream and not a dribble. Its gettin to the point where I cant sleep because the urge wakes me up constantly. But I also notice that if no one bothers me while I am asleep then I dont need to go. I was able to hold off for about 4 hours. And even then it was just a dribble :-(

After this, I dont care what they say, I will NEVER have one again. On a side not however, the last time I had the stent removed it caused me no discomfort at all. As soon as the thing was out of me, all my pain and discomfort immediatley left.

Good luck to all who have to have one.

I had my lithotripsy two weeks ago, 12 mm stone and have a stent in. At first I had catheter for 5 days and thought that was source of discomfort and aggravation, so was happy to have it out.

However, still having constant annoyance by stent. i feel pressure on my kidneys and hurts to stand up too long. I am not completely annoyed when sitting down but standing and walking just kills- so much pressure down below.

But, I found that taking pyridium, now over the counter, as AZO standard, or Uricalm, helps a lot! It's not 100% but it's given me painkiller-free days and been a help.

I get stent out in 9 more days- am a little nervous after reading posts but can it really be worse than everything else been through? This was my 4th lithotripsy and it took me days to recover- was in so much pain whereas the other ones I was back at work next day.

How is stent removal for women? I plan to take rest of day off but should I be at work next day?

Thanks

:( Okay I am 22 weeks pregnant and had a stent put in 5 days ago. I went to the hospital on monday with severe pain in my right side. After several MRI, CT Scans and Ultrasounds they still didnt have a good idea as to why i was in so much pain. For the first three nights in the hospital, i was not allowed to eat or drink and was being doped up with morphene every 2 hours because of the pain. I was in the worst pain ive ever exprienced. On top of the pain i was vomitting the whole time. I would say that between having to pee and getting sick, i was in the bathroom as long as i was in the hospital bed. I was misserable. Finally on the fourth day i was told they were going to put a stent in and everything would be great. I went in for the procedure around 2:30. I was never told anything about how i would feel afterward.

Well immediatley afterward i felt relieved that the pain in my side was gone. That only lasted till the epidural they gave me for the procedure wore off. 7:00 came and where my pain was, it was only soreness now, a big relief! Untill i went to use the bathroom, it went all downhill from there. I feel like i have to pee ALL the time. I can go to the bathroom (which is only a 2 second drip), stand up and have to go again. The feeling NEVER goes away. On top of that i am still in much discomfort and pain ALL the time. The doctors gave me something that was supossed tp calm the urge down, however there is no improvement.

They gave me pain killers for the pain, and those do nothing as well. So now it has been 5 days and i am misserable. Im either in bed all day, unable to walk or stand up straight, in the bath, which gives a little relief, or on the tiolet trying to pee. It has been the same thing for five days now and i cant take it anymore. Remember that im 5 and half months pregnant on top of all this. Because of this im not so sure i want any more children. (this will be my first) The stent i am being told will stay in untill 3 weeks after the baby is born. I have been on the phone with both my doctors and surgeon almost everyday, explaining that i cant take this and they say it will get better. Well it is NOT getting any better and im going to ask for it to be removed when i go back in in 2 days. This is pure hell im going through.

So to anyone who is pregnant and told you need a stent, pass on it. It is not worth it. Funny thing is, i dont even have stones or a blockage, my baby girl is actually sitting on my kidney and bladder causing the pain to build up. Im still not even sure what the point is of having it be in for such a long time. If anyone else has had anything similar to this, please help. What do i do, i cant live like this not able to function.

Kimmy, I have had 2 stents placed in 3 short years. The first time I had it taken out, it was a little discomfort but I felt oh so much better after it was out. I was able to work the next day. Now the second one, I dunno. I had it taken out under general anesthesia becuase I had to have another procedure done. So I think you will be ok. Maybe a lil sore for awhile.

Abarr982, the feelings you are feeling are like that whether you are pregnant or not. The constant urge to pee, the pain, the uncomfortableness. The everything. Try taking some pyridium. Its available over the counter. That may help. But since your pregnant, ask your doc first. Kudos to you if you can stand that thing in till 3 weeks after the baby is born. I couldnt stand it for 2.5 weeks. Over time tho your body will start getting used to it. I know by the end of my 2 weeks, it felt like I didnt have it in.

Good luck ladies.

Hello all.

I am a CHRONIC kidney stone patient. I have them suckers all the dang time. The last one was too big to pass, and had surgery to remove it. I was 8mo pregnant when the attack occurred, and my dr went ahead and induced me. The stone was lodged between the kidney and ureter....just STUCK...esp after pushing for an hour during labor. Anyways, I couldn't find a dr that accepted my WONDERFUL, state insurance. So, I went hospital to hospital trying to find someone, constantly being doped up on diladud. Oh the pain was horrible. I remember wrathing all over the hospital bed right after giving birth, crying and screaming as loud as I could, demanding pain medicine....or a gun...lol...or SOMETHING. It took the nurse 30 dang mins to come in and give me something.
Three weeks went by, and the stone was still there. One of the drs said my kidney was failing, and he went ahead and put a stent there to relieve the pressure. I was getting quite annoyed, even calling the local news station to report how messed up the insurance was. Too make this story shorter, I had the surgery....VERY painful. I woke up freaking out cause I was in so much pain, and they only gave me DARVOCET after being on diladud for a month. What a help THAT was. I couldn't move a muscle without screaming, and since I didn't move, I caught pneumonia. I had a temp of 105.4.
This is what I don't understand. They put me to sleep while putting in the stent, but are NOT to take it out. This dang stent has been in my body for 15, almost 16 months. I am almost scared to remove it, thinking tissue has grown to it, and they have to remove the whole ureter or something. If any of you have been in this situation, please email me at *****..and tell me what happened. Was it painful? Did they end up putting you to sleep since it's been in so long? I never get on this site, and I fear I will miss your reply. Thanks!

I am only 21 years of age and I just had a stent removed this morning and it was unlike anything I have ever experienced. I must say, I never want to experience it again!

Everything was going well and I had changed from my regular clothes to a paper garment. The nurse had me lie down and sparked up a conversation asking how I was and the such. As she was asking how old I was, she started putting this cold gel all over my nether regions.

She then asked if I have ever had kidney stones before, and as I was saying "No, this is the first"... I felt a large object go right inside my penis. I screamed! And that was just to get me ready..

Dr. Leonid Kotkin came in, great doctor I must say, and took the large object out. I was looking up the whole time. I didn't even want to know what was going on down there. Next thing I know, something is being pushed into my pee hole, there's what seemed like water or some fluid being squirted down there and I'm screaming, laughing, and every other emotion in between.

After a couple of minutes (what seemed like hours!) the doctor said, "thats it". I screamed "Thats it!" out of joy. Heh.

Not as painful as it is uncomfortable and haunting.. but I want to just say that I do NOT want to EVER go through that in my life.

Had my stent in for 2 weeks. Last week I had lithotripsy. I have never been so miserable in my life. Constantly urinating. I used ditrol, detripan and vesicare, nothing helped the bladder spasms. I kept calling doctor until they agreed to take it out. Yesterday I had it done. It was over in 30-60 seconds. No pain, I can't even say discomfort. I watched the process on a monitor. I will never again sign to have a stent put in. I have passed 4 kidney stones on my own without a stent. Painful yes, until it passes but not 2 weeks of misery.

Hello Everyone,

This is my first visit to this site. It's been recommended by my urologist that I undergo laser removal of my multiple kidney stones (each kidney is affected) and that I would have a stent placed for about 1 week after. He would do one kidney at a time. Has anyone else done this?

I am so scared!

had eswl surgery, stones on both sides as with the sonic surgery, the bigger the stone, the less it can break up into little pieces (that will pass) without pain, the stent stayed in for 8 days, very very uncomfortable some of the bigger stone fragments got caught on the stent (OUCH),went to the ER for pain finally when it was time to remove the stent, the two curly ends of the stent got tangled in the bladder, so he had a hard time trying to untangle them.ended up going to a hospital for same day surgery to have it removed, took longer to prep me,then to remove.
very bad experience for me,collected the stone fragments for DR to analyze, fourth experience with stones, first with stent (some of the broken stones were as big as some i had passed prior !!!)

:-D Hi all. I wrote a couple weeks back about having a stent put in. Well it has been almost 3 weeks and it was by far the worst weeks ive ever had. Im now just about 25 weeks pregnant and had my stent removed yesterday at 7:00 am. Oh my goodness, what a difference!! For the time that the stent was in EVERYTHIHNG was bad. I was on the phone with both my doctors and the surgeon everyday, or i was in the hospital.

Having that stent in made living absolutley impossible. I was never able to leave my house. I was in bed the entire time, doped up on pain meds that never really took any of the pain away. So finally i got my surgeon to discuss taking the stent out. They had planned on it staying in for 3 weeks after my baby was born. How was i supossed to care for my newborn if i couldnt care for myself. After making that point, the surgeon finally agreed that it was doing more harm than good. So almost 3 1/2 months early they set the following morning to take it out.

After reading all the horror stories on here about the pain of having it removed, i made sure they were going to give me another epidural, just as they had to put it in. Everything was going as planned till they brought me into the operating room. Thats when they told me my surgeon would not allow the epidural just some pain meds. I began to cry and demand that i not be able to feel anything. After several minutes of reassurance i was on the table with pain meds being sent to me through my iv. The surgeon first started to wipe and clean the area and i about jumped off the table. Because of my reaction to just the cleaning, they agreeed to use novacaine and several doses of stronger pain meds. Well, i felt EVERYTHING they were doing down there. Yes it was painfull and uncomfortable, just not nearly as bad as it would have been without anything. I cried the entire 5 min, it seemed more like forever. they had straped both my arms and legs down, had they not i would have jumped off the table. There is no way i would ever sign off on doing any of this again. For all of you who have had it removed in office....wow... you are brave!

It has been only a day since the removal of the stent and i feel GREAT! I got my first nights sleep in over 3 weeks and can actually walk standing upright. I am feeling like a new person, i forgot how it felt to feel normal.

Now for a question, has anyone had a tube and bag put on them in place of a stent? My sergeon says i have a 50% chance of needing that done. Im scared to think of that, but the upside is i was told there is no pain with the bag. Im crossing my fingers that my baby will no longer put weight on my kiddney and ureter. I am ready to enjoy this pregnancy for once. Time to wait and see.

Man it's like everyone can read your mind in here. I had surgery 2 weeks ago to remove several stones from both kidneys. After surgery I was vomiting and could not urinate at all. The Dr. then came in and informed me that I would need emergency surgery to place stents. Now at this point they had tried 3 different catheters as well. So at midnight that night I went back in for stent placement. I must say after that life was great just total relief. Now on last Thursday they removed the catheter which felt great as well. However when Friday rolled around the stents were making life unbearable. I to have had bladder spasms and pain when urinating in the kidney area. Sometimes this pain is excruciating. The Dr. want's me to wait until Thursday to have the stents removed but I'm hoping my begging will get the job done on tuesday instead. I have had some relief with Pyridium, yes it changes your urine color but it does take the edge off. Without it man I don't know what I would have done so far. A warm bath is a good help as well. I haven't been sleeping hardly at all and pain meds don't do much either. I just hope I get the immediate relief most people did when having the stents removed. Some say instant relief but even if it's a couple days I'm fine with that, just get these darn things out of me NOW!! I would NEVER recommend these stents and will never have them placed again!

To all you folks out there who are wondering about kidney stint removal,
my husband had his removed this morning at the urologists office after
a kidney stone laster surgery. It has been 5 days since his surgery and they took the the stint/string out without any sedation, etc. The Dr.
counted to 3 and pulled it out so quick that it was over before he got to
3. My husband was in alot of pain and had to lay down, he almost passed out. He had to lay in office for about 15 mins, came home and took pain meds, and he is doing well now. If you dont like pain, ask for
some sedation. He pretty much had no choice in the matter, they just told him this is how we do it. Good luck to all!
