Did you know that we eat our mucus? Mucus is actually a body fluid that is produced in nasal and sinus cavities by mucus-secreting glands. Mucus is the “purifier”. It filters the air we breathe and keeps dust, pollen, smoke, microorganisms out of our lungs. When everything works properly, the mucus just drains in the throat and we swallow it without even noticing it.
Now, when mucus gets discolored and thick, it means there is some sort of inflammation or infection caused by different bacteria. They live, eat, divide, and take dump in the mucus and they also die in the mucus changing the mucus’ color from clear to yellow, brown and green. It is also bacteria that makes it thick and hard to swallow.
However, if you are smoking, you are most likely to have discolored mucus.
Since it is most commonly a bacterial infection that changes the thickness and color of the mucus, you need to see a doc for a proper antibiotic. Don’t take anything on your own because who knows what kind of bacteria it is.
