This one is serious..

As soon as the boy and his lady move into their own place, I will need to clean the carpet.

Professional?

Carpet Doctor rental from Home Despot?

Cough up the $260.00 bucks for a good machine?

I should note the subfloor is composition board and will delaminate with too much moisture.... :x
Totally cough up the money for your own carpet cleaner. I love mine. I don't use it as much here as I did in Charlotte (had white carpets there, whereas here I have almost astro turf), but it is handy. I use it about 4x a year to clean all of the carpets, and quite often just for spills & such.

We have a Bissell handheld for those once in a while spots. Works great.

We hired Stanley Steamer once and I was very disappointed and I will never hire them again.

Are the rug doctors easier to use than they were years ago?

I installed wood floors. (did that myself) Now its swiffer or vacuum as needed...

I clean the carpets every year at the office with a rental unit (actually 2) from Home Depot. Works like a charm.

I'd hire someone. I've borrowed someone's carpet cleaner before and it was a huge PITA. Hired a company when we moved for the house we were selling and they did a great job. Will call them again.

I have tried 2 different companies and I wasn't real happy with the results so I have been doing it myself with a Rug Doctor from the grocery store.

I've rented the rug doctor before, $20, not too tough to use and it does a great job.

We do the HD rental... but instead of their soap, use OxiClean
