My fingernails are very pale, almost whiteish until near the top where there is still a pink band. I've read the sites relating to heart, liver, kidneys etc and its frightening !! Could there be a simpler explanation ?

Pale nail fingers would usually indicate iron deficiency. This is very common especially in women. Blue nails would be a sign of a heart or lung disease.
The most common causes of iron deficiency are pregnancy, bad iron absorption, low iron intake from foods and blood loss. Iron is necessary in our bodies, it helps hemoglobin carry oxygen throughout the body and lack of it usually makes you very tired, it may make your skin pale as well, you may feel lightheaded, or short of breath or have cold hands and feet.
You can increase iron intake from the foods you eat by consuming meat, eggs and whole grain foods.
It would be also wise to see a doctor and have a blood test done to determine what is going on.
