Hi. I’m 23 and up to now I was in quite a good shape. Anyway, last night I was about to make love to my girlfriend but couldn't keep it hard – this is the very first time this has happened to me!! After I ruled out several possible causes I have narrowed it down to the Clariton D. This is not the first time I have experienced erectile difficulties not long after taking it. I take Clariton D for my allergies and I sometimes really need it. I noticed that this does not occur every time I take Clariton but when it does, than it is usually the day I have been taking it. What should I do? Is it possible Clariton is causing my “impotency”? What should I do about it? I get very frustrated when this happens because it is off and on. Can anybody here help me? Please reply asap. Thanks

At some point in life, ALL men will experience trouble getting or maintaining an erection and that is the fact. However, it is indeed too early for you to experience it and I completely understand your frustration. First of all, reassure your partner that it isn't her. You can even share this resply with her if she is unconvinced. Impotence is the chronic condition common in eldery (65+). On the other hand, in younger men, it is often situational and usually related to factors such as drinking, smoking cigarettes, using other drugs, anxiety, and many other factors. In fact, alcohol is one of the top causes of not being able to get an erection so try remembering weather you had any alcohol those days. Also, so far I haven’t heard of Clariton D being related to erectile function so I really can’t tell weather Clariton is the cause or not. Anxiety may also play a role like if you are worried that you might not get an erection. If this problem persists despite not using alcohol and drugs of any kind than have it checked by your doc to rule out other factors. Good luck

Claritin D contains pseudoephedrine, a drug that is found in many cold and allergy medications.

Pseudoephedrine is also used as first-line therapy for an erection that lasts too long. It can make it very difficult to get and maintain an erection.

You might try an allergy medicine that doesn't contain a decongestant (Like regular Claritin, or Benadryl). They may not work as well on your allergy symptoms, but at least they wouldn't cause erectile problems.

Do not take Benadryl instead. It causes erectile dysfunction. o.O

I've also noticed that when taking Mucinex D, which also contains pseudoephedrine, I cannot maintain an erection. I've also seen this happen with dextromethorphan, which is in Robotussin. This only occurs while the drugs are in effect, and seems to go away after the specified duration on these medicines. At all other times, my erections are just fine.

I don't take Benedryl, so I wouldn't know anything about that, however.

Exact same issue as quine, taking Claritin D and inexplicable erection failure resulted. Regular Claritin (Loratadine) seems fine for me, so I'm guessing it's the 240mg of Pseudoephedrine Sulfate in the Ds that is the culprit.

I took mucinex d, clariton d, and benedryl all the same day throughout different periods.. needless to say i went to go do it with my gf and i was fine at first then boom out of no where i cant explain what is going on. I was so ashamed i refused to give up and my girlfriend who was aware did her best to fix the situation. Eventually i got it up and preformed but BE AWARE once you go you may experience some pain. After i went it felt like i was shooting blanks if you know what i mean.. glad to see others had the same issues.... i freaked out.

GOOD LUCK

Add me to the list. It's happened to me at least 7 or 8 times, but it's always an inability to maintain erection. I can get it up, but after a few minutes it goes away and there's nothing I can do to get it back. Without pseudoephedrine, it's never happened. But I'm 7 for 7 on the days I've taken something with pseudo in it.

Same problem here, but please note that it might not just be the Reactin thats causing the problems...I was scared sh*tless when for the past week or so, everytime I would have sex with my girlfriend, I would lose my erection after about 15-20 minutes. I am 22 and am in good health, and have a very strong libido, so I was really worried about the problem. Turns out that 83% of allergy sufferers complain that their allergies affect their sex life in one way or another, many saying they are unable to 'complete' sexual activities while suffering from their allergies. Seeing as it is mid September, and Ragweed season is in full swing, I am 90% sure the problem is a result of this...hopefully lol.

I've been speculating this connection for quite some time now.

I am a male, 41 year old, so at an age where other things may be a factor, but, I exercise often, eat right, and never had issues in the past.

In the past 3 years I went from taking Claritin-D seasonally, to every day, to twice a day.

When I went overseas, I thought, well, lets see if it's my local oak trees causing my allergies. Well, it wasn't (so I am thinking something systemic like dairy, though I don't consume much dairy), then, after a month or so off of it, I started getting harder at night, and noticed a larger volume of fluid...

All other factors were the same, so, I started thinking it was the pseudoephedrine. I think it is..

I'd love to see a real scientific study on this one.

I had suspect of Mucinex, however I had problems with Claratin in the past. I took Mucinex for a full week and it seems that the problem is still lingering (erectile dysfunction). Does it have to get completly out of your system?

There is no doubt that these drugs cause ED, in my opinion.  The frustration for me is just how ignorant many doctors are to this issue.  I've even had one totally dismiss the idea when I mentioned it.  I'm hopeful there is or will be another treatment that helps with my allergies without this side effect.  I have had this problem with Claritin-D, Mucinex-D, and Deconsal (a previous prescription version of Mucinex-D).  For me, the problem shows up after a couple/few days of the medicine.  After discontinuing med, problem disappears.  Upon resuming med, the problem reappears.  (In medical research, this is a classic "challenge-rechallenge" approach to identifying causal relationship.)

i am 32 years old and female, i have been taking Mucinex DM and i'm turned on i told my husband this, were both sick. well problem is we have no sex drive to continue and lack of hunger for food. Granted i feel like c**p and that i wasnt able to please my husband. For the love of god i thought something was wrong with me, and to find out i had the same problem. So i tried something eating a piece of chocolate. yeah my mouth said oh hey its chocolate but it didnt say YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS CHOCOLATE.

I want to thank everyone for their contributions. You have been so very helpful! To contribute, here is a list of allergy medication that MAY cause erectile dysfunction (not just temporary problems with erection caused by Claritin-D):

Dimehydrinate (Dramamine)
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
Hydroxyzine (Vistaril)
Meclizine (Antivert)
Promethazine (Phenergan)
