Could it be (clear) blood plasma? It feels like blood, like menstruation, just clear.

I'm 18 and at the start of this month I had my regular period l do every month, but about 2 days ago I got them again. I thought okay maybe it's just one of these months but then I realized I was passing heavy clots of blood and I am leaking a watery bloody substance! Usually for my period a tampon would keep me in check for about 4 or 5 hours but it's literally running right through it and I now have to wear a pad also. I can't eve go to my GP surgery as it's closed for the weekend! Is this normal to happen for a once off or should I be worried?

I have researched this and believe you are closest to the answer with this. I read that tampons can act as tea bags and the liquid fluid will flow right through while the blood and thicker discharge gets captured. I also found that this started for me when I switched to Tampax brand. Switching back to Playtex has helped eliminate this for the most part. My flow is extremely heavy due to fibroids so this watery experience was quite unusual. I can't help but think as I read about the statements here from all ages and that doctors are not familiar with this, that we are all being exposed to something new in the way of environmental or food chemicals that are causing this. Scary thought.

Happy to hear I'm not alone.

I started mensturating when I was 11/12 (very light of course).  I didn't notice the fluid (which for me was always a light, pinkish color that occured towards the end of my cycle) until several years ago.  I have been on and off birth control -- it will happen regardless.  It's like this -- my period will come, bleed out, blah blah.  Then stop.  I'm all clean and everything's fine.  THEN this fluids stuff will come out and be all leaky.  I've personally found that tampons made by O.B. (the kind that is the new type with the plasticy feel to it if that makes sense) DOES absorb it.  Kind of scary though to be honest, I feel like it's either something that has accumulated and is finally exiting (but why does it wait 2 extra days on average to leave AFTER the bleeding -- this makes no sense), or I'd need an ultrasound to see what exactly is going on.  It doesn't hurt, smell funny, or present itself with a fever or any other (noticeable) change.  Weird though, we all have such similar processes of leaky fluid lol... I DOUBT it's vaginal secretions (the type similar to sex) because usually that is slimy lol come on.  I like the idea of cleaning but!  Why now does it occur and what's up with the consistency?

I came across this thread while googling my symptoms, I am glad to know I'm not alone.  I am 29. After giving birth to my son a year and a half ago, I did not go back onto birth control until 3 months ago when I was forced to because my doctor told me I had ovarian cysts. So, this is my first period off birth control. In the past few days it felt like I was leaking, but when I run to the bathroom there is no blood but my underwear is soaked by this clear discharge, smells like ammonia to me... it reminded me of when my water broke while pregnant. When I go to change my tampon (playtex) there is some blood but mostly water. Did anyone get any answers from their doctor? I am planning to see my OB/GYN next month.

I thought I would share my experience to see if anyone could relate. I plan on talking to a doctor and doing some research of my own, and will follow up on this thread if I learn of anything that could be of help. I’m 19, average weight. I have had one sex partner and we are sexually active. I have been off the pill for 11 months. I came home tonight and realized I hadn’t changed my tampon in 10-11 hours. I pulled it out, and a large amount of liquid (1/2 cup?) came out immediately afterwards. My tampon was filled with blood, but what was on the floor was clear, odorless, and water like. Prior to this I have had some pain with urinating for about a month. It feels like I need to go even after I am done peeing. The feeling is almost painful, and I have the urge to push to make it stop. It goes away in less than a minute, but it’s been happening every time I pee. I thought I had a urinary tract infection, and was planning on seeing a doctor. My other theory is that this pain with urination (and this fluid with my period) could be related to female ejaculation. I have never had an orgasm, and have been actively trying to get myself there the past few months. I feel like I am close during sex and masturbation, but I am unable to get any release. This tension is similar to what I feel when I pee. I would like to hear other people’s comparisons between orgasm/ejaculation and this liquid during menstruation. How are they similar/different? If I find anything helpful, I will post on this forum again. Best wishes ladies!

i have been having this also for a few years. It happens about 3-4 times a year when I menstruate. I'm 43.  It is a clear fluid that comes out and soaks my pants.  It is not urine.  Sometimes it has a bad smell to it, sometimes not. I've been to two different ob gyns about it. The first one thought I needed ultrasound and biopsy. Had a second option and ob I saw said this was normal with aging.

and also to the above poster my fluid is definately not ejaculation as it is a continuous stream of fluid for days during menstruation.

Hi, urine is sterile, so it couldn't have given you a vaginal infection.

I have experienced this for 26 years without a break since my first period at 15 to today's period at 41. I've never thought it was unusual. I assumed it happens to everyone. I've had investigations for other unrelated issues and nothing is wrong with me.
