I've now had this strange problem twice! The first time, a couple months ago, I had a menstral cup in and when I took it out it was filled with a clear liquid. Now, this morning I woke up (with a tampon in) and felt a huge gush cover me and I thought I had bleed through everywhere...nope just this strange clear liquid soaking my underwear and pants. It felt like when my water broke!? Anyway, I then called the doctor and spoke with a nurse who admitted she had no idea what it could be. She's going to have a doctor call me back within the next couple days. I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this, but I wish someone would get an answer. Good luck to all!

I am having this problem - it soaks my whole tampon on my period - no blood.  Does anyone think it could be a cyst rupturing?

I have a theory.  It is blood serum.  It is what is left after blood separates and clots.  I am passing huge clots right now with lots and lots of clear fluid.  I have had my period for over a month now and now this is happening. Bed is soaked.  Super Plus tampons last thirty minutes.  It is the only thing that makes sense.  Forty years old.  Three kids.  PCOS.  Out of control hormones.  Can't take the pill or hormones because of migraines.  I am looking into natural hormones.  It has to be blood serum.  There is no other explanation I can come up with.

Yeah! I think it's just your body's way of trying to push the tampon out due to leaving it in too long! Nearly positive

I am 26. Never had sex, so I'm not pregnant. I started using tampons this summer, even though I also started my period when I was ten. Last month I was afraid I left one in... so I am hoping it is not that! Also, in the last few months I've had a LOT of dietary changes that cut out about 30% of my diet...because I can't eat dairy... and a lot of other stuff I love...:-/ The cysts thing scares me... Hopefully someone can resolve this!

Hello everyone! I have a solution to this problem. Is anyone using tampons with a leak guard braid? It catches any kind if leakage ( in our case, urine) and sends it straight back up into the core (the center of the tampon). Makes perfect sense. I now have an infection because of this. This has been happening to me for months. As soon as I switched tampons. I'm using tampax pearl plastic. (Unscented). I plan on calling the company...

Same thing happened to me today. Could it be an ovarian cyst bursting?

I am 54 years and having the very same problem, my period stopped last month for one month and came back this month , and its my first experience today like my water broke but, I am not pregnant.I said thank you lord because I had just reached home and it was gushing. Also last month the doctor did an ultrasound and told me I had uterine fibroids that did not require treatment.

I read this after a quick search as I am having this also, the panicked neurotic person who was so upset that it's not normal calm down! For real, no one is dying that has posted here that has it. The commonality is Tampons, PCOS/Fibroids/cysts negative pregnancy tests. The tampon in too long theory isn't likely as we all seem to be concerned about ourselves hygienically. The cumming theory is pure ignorance and certainly points to someone who needs Anatomy/Physiology coursework. The blood serum separation theory.

If your discharge is clear and not overly foul outside of your ovulation and menstruation period, it is a good indication that the discharge is healthy. Considering all of these factors will assist women in determining if their menstrual cycles are normal and healthy.

Unhealthy vaginal discharge is generally associated with bacterial infections. Although there are several forms of such infections, each is associated with an unpleasant odor, vaginal irritation, itching, and painful urination. The most common type of unhealthy vaginal discharge is bacterial vaginosis.4 This discharge can be caused by the organism Gardnerella, an anaerobic bacteria,6 which forms in the absence of oxygen. However, Gardnerella is only one of many bacteria that can be associated with bacterial vaginosis; others include Prevotella, Bacteroides, Mycoplasma, Mobiluncus. Bacterial vaginosis can be detected by clear, milky white, or gray discharge and vaginal odor. The discharge can be light or heavy. However, symptoms are worse near menstruation and after having unprotected sexual intercourse. When the vaginal fluid is mixed with semen, the odor intensifies. Although women who are not sexually active can develop bacterial vaginosis, it is more common in women who have had multiple sexual partners. Women may also be more apt to develop this condition after engaging in sexual intercourse with a new partner.4 Douching and poor feminine hygiene also increase the likelihood of developing this bacterial discharge and others. Many women who have bacterial vaginosis do not even notice the symptoms. Even in the absence of physical symptoms, however, bacterial vaginosis can be detected during a physical exam and treated with antibiotics.

There are actually so many sites that indicate depending on when the "flow" is occurring gives the signs as to what female part may be playing a role and why.Usually this is normal vaginal secretions that serve to lubricate and keep the pH (acidity) stable. Rarely this can be from a connection between the bladder and vagina, but that would not just occur during your monthly cycle, and would usually cause other problems like recurrent bladder infections.

Most vaginal discharge is completely normal. However, if your vaginal discharge has an unusual odor and appearance, or is accompanied by itching or pain, it may be a sign that something's wrong.

Vaginal discharge is a combination of fluid and cells that are continuously shed through your vagina. The function of vaginal discharge is to clean and protect the vagina. The color and consistency of vaginal discharge vary from whitish and sticky to clear and watery between your menstrual periods, roughly corresponding to the stage of your reproductive cycle. It's also normal to have some vaginal discharge during pregnancy.END OF MAYO

My research has indicated that women with various types of this discharge have it at different times, volume, patterns based on their specific cycle and menstruation issues PCOS/FIBROIDS/ETC. Odor can lead us to believe you are dealing with something unusual , however remember is the odor is the same each cycle...that is likely your normal. And yes the body can emit odors that resemble an ammonia smell as it attempts to flush toxins and keep us homestatic for child bearing .Infections will generally increase in intensity causing more painful side effects as the bacteria/fungus/STD grows. It is possible to harbor an STD for many years, but I am assuming for the general public we have some type of care, screenings, at some point during this process. If not go to the health department for goodness sake!

It is also possible that Tampons throw off the natural occurring balances for some women with more sensitive systems or based on the type of Tampon that may disrupt them / Brand, size, scented.

Doctors are human beings evaluating a general set of organs ...everyone is unique and experiences different patterns, with Doctors of different experience levels with patients that may or may not have complained of this issue. Most OB/GYNS are male! therefore they likely did not experience clear discharge themselves and rely on us to bring it forth.

Just some thoughts for those trying to put label on our unique self-diagnosis

I though that too...but I have not used tampons this time!

Still don't be alarmed, it is very relative to our body's self adjusting and flushing toxins.

The "cumming" theory is NOT pure ignorance, so the condescension is unnecessary...in the absence of a definite diagnosis, it is as valid a hypothesis as any! This clear liquid during my period is exactly the same texture and smell as the discharge I sometimes get after a particularly strong orgasm- (medical opinion is divided on what causes female "ejaculation" -quite a misleading term, as it is nothing like male ejaculation- but it is thought to be possibly caused by a gland, can't remember the name of it, but it is the equivalent of the Skene's gland in men). My feeling is this gland is getting stimulated, either by tampon use in some of us, or it's becoming overactive or stimulated for some other reason, and that is what is causing the discharge.

This used to happen to me when I was young. The first few years I had my period it would happen once in a while. Then it just stopped. I'm in my mid thirties and it hasn't happened in twenty years. But its happening to a friend of mine. So I guess its not uncommon... why doesn't anyone know why this happens?

PCOS runs in my family. I believe that the liquid is from cysts which burst or leak during my periods because my abdominal swelling is so horrible during my periods now.  My problems started about 5 years ago when I had gone to the restroom at work and had a gush of clear liquid come out of me that was not from my bladder.  I know this because I still had to pee very badly after this happened.  It did scare me but I let it go.  Then about 3 months later I started having severe abdominal pain after work.  I barely made it into my house and to the bathroom.  When I peed I felt something come out of me with a tremendous amount of pain.  When I looked in the toilet I found a large piece of tissue.  This is very gross to say, but it looked like a piece of raw chicken breast. I freaked out and made an appointment with my doctor.  Of course he acted like I was nuts.  Friends told me I had a miscarriage. I hated talking about it.  Ever since then I've had the clear fluid, terrible periods, swelling so bad that I can eat and I have severe diarrhea during my periods.  The difference for me is that I have the clear leakage BEFORE my period even starts.  About two days before my period I start with the cramping and swelling and the fluid starts coming out.  I have to wear a pad.  Then, when my period starts I have to wear a pad for the clear liquid.  I am a stomach sleeper and when I sleep on my stomach more liquid comes out.  Sometimes it seems like I've had a cup of it come out at night.  My bed will be wet and of course my clothes.  I agree with the previous person that this has to do with PCOS and cyst.  Just the face that it happens before my peroid, and the fact that more comes out when I sleep on my stomach.  I also believe the doctors do not catch this problem because we go in after the liquid comes out, so these cysts are drained.  I am going to a new doctor and I hope to be heard because I go through a box of tampons and many pads in one day.  I will also add that the liquid I have always smells of ammonia and is not offensive.  I am sick of this problem!!!!
