I am 53 and I have always noticed this during my period, just figured it was fluid from the uterus that had to come out, but you are right it overflows a tampon quickly and leaves a wet mess. Well just recently I have started using the DivaCup...do it, it has changed my life, I feel so much cleaner during my period, it is convenient and saves a ton of money and I do not have these overflow accidents, the only leakage is if you have not inserted it correctly, keep trying, it is worth it and only one night during a very heavy flow, it had filled almost full and I think because I was laying down it leaked through the little holes which if you read about it are there for this reason. But back to the watery discharge, when you use a DivaCup you actually see what is coming out of you and how much, I thought I would be grossed out, but the blood is mostly clean and bright red until your flow slows at the end, but you will see that liquid and understand what the issue has been with the leakage of the tampon, way more liquid, yellow or red tinted comes out at once than the blood flow, today I noticed it had a foul smell and freaked out so wound up looking on the internet to see if it might be a serious problem with the cup.As far as the liquid, how dumb of a doctor to knot have an answer, I expect a female doctor would know exactly what you are talking about, it has to just be a by product of the blood. We probably are so used to having a tampon or pad soak it up and accept a slight smell during out cycle from the air creating a smell as the blood escapes, but with the DivaCup the blood is never exposed to the air or in a bacteria ridden wet cotton stick inserted into our vaginas, get a cup and learn more about your mentrual flow and feel so much cleaner. I take it out during a shower and wash it off and reinsert. I have not had any problems in public restrooms, I try to go into the handicap stall that has a sink, but you will find once you have become comfortable with it, you can go many hours without needing to empty it.

I am 49. I had such heavy bleeding last summer that it caused my hemoglobin and ferretin levels to be so low I had to go for iron iv's for five weeks. My gynecologist then did an ultrasound and found fibroids as well. After that my cycle seemed to disappear so my gynecologist did a d/c in her office. Then I lost my cycle all together. I do get terrible cycle cramping and lately a clear discharge which forces me to wear panty liners constantly.
My gynecologist retired this month which will complicate things. I was told about a procedure which just removes the lining of your uterus so you don't get a cycle or it's minimal. Does anyone know if that helps with this problem as well??
