This should help all of you out in a way. It does show a series of problems could exist but at least it is something. I have been suffering for 4 days straight & have been alternating between const. & diar. Mucous is pretty heavy now which is why I came to the internet. Anyway, check out the link I just posted as it deals with many reasons WHY.... bottom line is I'm probably going to have to break down & see a real doc even though I can't afford to go....

I have the same gel like diarrhea and went to my doctor. Blood tests were done and I was found to have a deficiency of vitamin D. This caused my symptoms. The doctor gave me a script for a once a week high dose vitamin D capsule. Hope this works.

You should get tested for C diff... it's a bacterial colon infection. You will give in a stool sample and they can test. if it is you need to get treated asap. i waited 3 weeks and have had it now for 3 months. the sooner you get it treated the better. i had loose stools with "slime" originally. this past time i finished the antibiotics i now have the slime and blood. i am back on the antibiotics, which are horrible, but the only thing that helps. it can get very serious if not treated. don't be embarrassed, it's better to suffer a little embarrassment than to risk your health. good luck

I'm a 20 year old male with an average diet and I tend to make a bowel movement once every 2-3 days. I have no physical disorder such as IBS or anything of the like. Also, I am on no medication.
However, the point at hand is - less than 24 hours ago, I stood suffering constricting pains every time I inhale strongly. Suffering this plus arch backed, I advanced to make a bowel movement and to my shock... there was a strange sensation alongside an odd bubble-sound even... and I looked down the bowl of the toilet out of curiosity and confusion to inspect what had produced this irregular sound and there was a strange translucent amber-like grease or gel. This is one of those phenomenons that I have never heard anyone mention. I have never even read of it in health magazines or even online! It was such a bizarre sight, I didn't even feel it fall from me. Seeing this, I (will admit that this is a stupid solution to any problem) have been too worried to make a bowel movement since my last attempt which was less than 24 hours ago. I am too terrified to find out what this gel/grease substance really is. I will find out what it is in a few hours or so as I am to visit the GP very soon. If anyone know what this is in the meantime, that would be much appreciated :-) However, I will find out soon and I will tell you all what this gel like substance really is and I will tell whether there is something to worry about or otherwise.
The answer will arrive soon.
P.S. I am deeply sorry for those that had to bare reading this story.

Sounds like colitis. Most commonly found in women starting in their 20's and 30's. Evident by the mucus like blood substance associated with BM's. This is caused by the inflammation in the colon. See a gastrointestinal specialist. They will have to get a stool sample and do a colonoscopy to be sure. Most forms are cure-able with an ulcer form that is not. However if this goes untreated it will continue and get worse. I am 33. And recently diagnosed and medicine has helped.

I am also having the same issues of gas, more than one bowel movements per day, blood and mucus in the stool, and have been exposed to patients that have similar issues that have lead to removal of the colon and death. After having a colonoscopy by a general medical doctor, I was diagnosed with colitits and perscribed with Sulfonazyl which showed some improvement then failed. Now I am requesting to see a specialist. Hope that I will have some new information from this appointment.
Go to a GI specialist. It is most likely an infection that is difficult to know what test to order and then the best antibiotic needed to help cure the infection.

Reading through a lot of these posts I'm finding myself quite shocked that people are concerned about going to the doctors. Doctors are here to help you. Mucus being produced isn't a good sign especially if its over a long period of time. Dark blood around the stool in worst cases can be bowel cancer. Light blood can be a tear in the rectum, but even with that you shouldn't be producing a lot of mucus. If your stools are regularly coated in mucus it can be chrones disease.
I suggest all the people in this forum go into google and search NHS Direct no matter what country your from. Its a free website in the UK that helps you get an accurate diagnosis from your symptoms. Don't leave your worries unchecked as they can become dangerous to your health and well being. I hope this helps! Sorry for the huge essay but I have a 19 year old girlfriend who is going through the same thing.

excess of vitamin c can cause mucus/blood. so can other supplements and foods. Red foods, like beets, can often leech out a red color in stool that can be mistaken for blood (as can beverages like Campari- bright red)- keep a chart of what goes in (your meals/snacks) and what comes out- you may find a correlation. if so, modifying your diet may be all that is necessary. diarrhea is often accompanied by pain and/or cold/hot sweats/flashes- two separate issues. diet is key. check with a doc , but try to suss out whether it's an internal, persistent issue or diet related by following healthy "new start" eating program for a few weeks. i am NOT a doc or in the medical profession, so please check out reliable sources for guidance and advice. What has worked for me (and my dog, as it happens) is this:
Drink a good deal of water throughout the day. Necessary for lubrication and soft stools.
Temporarily avoid vitamins/supplements unless a doc has told you to take them.
consume "healthy" oils in your diet (poly unsats and mono unsats), eliminate bad fats, like trans fats (shortening, margarine, oleo, etc). if stools are hard, take a tablespoon of a healthy oil daily, like flax oil (rich in omega 3,6,9's), cod liver oil, even olive oil. This may help skin tone, as well.
Do NOT use laxatives.
if needed, use a syringe (flexible bulb type- washable- ascertain compatibility to avoid allergic reactions- as in latex, etc...) type enema filled with distilled (clean, bottled, sanitary) warm water alone, or mix with a bit of healthy oil- like food grade mineral oil or olive oil(not baby oil!, no scents or additives!). Pure glycerin from the pharmacy may help, too. This will aid in evacuating stool without straining. (as an aside, Elvis died whilst straining too hard).
if your stool is hard or compacted, your body will create mucus to try and promote evacuation. Delicate internal tissues will bleed if stool is too hard, as well.
Diet: eat a healthy, fiber rich diet for at least two weeks and observe the results. Drink liquids with every food intake. consume healthy oils (salad dressing , etc).
AVOID all bad fats. never eat without drinking water, juice, etc.
AVOID all processed foods- all. Make everything you eat from scratch. do not over eat. try 'grazing'- eating smaller meals more frequently.
incorporate soluble fibers first, slowly adding insoluble fibers.
start with very limited variety of foods that are healthy and balanced for two weeks. journal your results.
if all is well, slowly add more varieties of foods and journal, avoiding problem causing ingredients, until you are evacuating without strain, mucus, or blood.
if you experience severe pain consistently, lose blood by itself, feel a burning or hungry feeling, see a doc immediately- could indicate an ulcer or other gi issue.(a gnawing hunger sensation that is resolved by food intake can indicate a duodenal ulcer). Proper diet can reverse many of these conditions, with or without meds, depending on your your doc's advice and your commitment.
also, avoid nsaids unless prescribed (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc). these irritate stomach.
avoid alcohol, or limit to an occasional beer or red wine.
avoid salty foods. salt can attract water to bowels.
consult a health professional regarding vitamins, minerals, supplements, etc. and proper use.
incorporate fresh, organic juices to your daily routine.
avoid uncultured dairy products- limit intake of dairy, and then consume cultured dairy only- like yogurt (organic, not the 'yoplait' type). sweeten with maple syrup or honey or fresh fruit if you like; also cheeses, cottage cheese, etc- never eat cool whip or the like.
DO help your natural intestinal flora by consuming broad spectrum probiotics- daily- especially after medical treatments that kill these off, like antibiotics or penicillin. just one variety won't do- so read the label, take one with many "good" bacteria- each is specific to a particular food type. a probiotic with enzymes is also a good idea. as your colonies of digestive-helpers proliferate, you will notice that you can consume a wider range of foods more comfortably.
do eat lots of whole fruits and veg.... they should be the largest percentage of your caloric intake. eat a 'rainbow' of these- orange, red, yellow, leafy greens, purples, etc- each have unique vitamin/mineral profiles and phyto nutrients- and act synergistically to increase bio-availability.
avoid processed grains when cooking. expand your grain diet beyond wheat and corn and processed soy (look at cereal boxes carefully, too)- in fact- avoiding wheat altogether for a few weeks is a very healthy practice- then see what happens as you slowly reintroduce it. other grains, like spelt, contain the same ratio of proteins that wheat contains and can be substituted in baking; many folks tolerate spelt but not wheat.
a variety of rice- other than the prosaic 'white", can be substituted with fantastic effect- brown, wild, sticky, jasmine, black/purple, basmati- etc... rotate types.
other grains- barley, kasha, amaranth, quinoa, etc. are fine substitutes, too; and each will add different micro- nutrients for a well rounded diet.
if small seeds like poppy, sesame, etc. cause pain or irritation, see a doc- this could indicate diverticulitis/osis- also controllable/reversible by diet- but often a precursor to incurable conditions if left unchecked.
I AM NOT A DOCTOR. these are my own experiences. they worked for me.
Last- investigate food grade clay or diatomaceous earth as an excellent binder, it can help clean out years of bad habits and toxins and help you start fresh- faster- and help produce stools that don't rip your insides (blood) or require body- produced lubrication (mucus like protein substance), IF followed correctly as part of a healthy food protocol. an unblocked intestinal system will help you to absorb nutrients, too. but don't take my word- use a search engine to read about it.
best of luck!

I don't know if you still have this account but I am a 25 year old female with a very similar issue, I've developed painful cramps in this last year that I've never had before and recently I've had some issues with my rectum.. my boyfriend and I had anal sex and at first I thought that was the cause but the issues is continuing with the strange gel like substance combined with what I assume is blood (its a dark pink sometimes red addition to the gel) no, we haven't had anal sex in the last few weeks so it cant be lube and I don't let him cum in there either.. i'm really worried. i could barely stand all day from the pain and I don't have health insurance. i quit my job a few months back because I made too much money there to go to school. Neither of my parents ever had real jobs to put me on their insurance and honestly this is the only really scary problem I've encountered in my life. If I could know what happened with your issue or if you have any other advice for me I would sincerely appreciate it. Thank you for your time.

This solution worked for me today... and someone else pointed it out here too: vinegar. (I used Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar.) Dilute with water to taste (I used about three or four tablespoons in a tall glass). Generally, if you can drink it without burning, both while you are drinking it and afterward, you should be fine. Causes cramping though!
Your constipation related issues should disappear, and so too should the mucous after a few trips to the restroom.
Additionally, I take Vitamin C and Vitamin E with a 25 mg Pill of Iron, three times a day.
BTW, I am a 240lb Male.
