I had this problem too for year, BUT I FINALLY solved the problem, and I'm so grateful. The solution is 2 parts and can be found at your local whole foods or health food store. You need two things to fix this: Digestive enzymes and HCL. First of all, anytime you eat cooked food, you need to take digestive enzymes. We start losing these enzymes starting around age 30 and it gets really bad after age 40. Take digestive enzymes at the beginning of the meal with the first bite of food. I know that "Beano" claims to be a digestive enzyme, but you need to spend a little money and get a good one, so try some of the ones at Whole foods.

Next, you need HCL. Most people will say you need to get rid of the acid in your stomach. The problem is that you have the wrong type of acid in your stomach. The healthy acid, the type that young people have in their stomachs is HCL Hydrochloric Acid, and you can also buy this at a health food store. This one you take at the end of the meal. Depending on your size, you need to adjust your dose. Start with one after the meal. If that doesn't work, on the next meal take two. Once you get to the right HCL dose, you won't have the "throat clearing" after meals.

Your stomach is one part of your body that is actually supposed to be acidic. You've heard people compare it to battery acid, right? Well, it's supposed to be acidic......just make sure it's the right type of acid which is hydrochloric acid.......sold in health food stores.

In addition, to make things work really really well......start taking some probiotics. Probiotics help keep your good bacteria working well in your intestines. A good probiotic is one that you buy refrigerated. If you buy one that is not refrigerated, it won't work, so buy a good one cause there are lots out there that aren't refrigerated.

This whole throat clearing thing is totally caused by the digestive tract, and I promise what i wrote will help you. It feels like sinus drainage, but it's caused by your stomach.

I was the queen of throat clearing, and now I"m free from it..........I remember one time I went to the dental and he couldn't do a procedure on me cause I kept clearing my throat which made my tongue move slightly and he was afraid he would hit my tongue with the drill and he was highly irritated that I couldn't hold still..............but, if you try not to clear your throat, it makes you feel like you can't breathe.......so, trust me when I say I can relate.

Just wanted to share the fact that I found a solution to my problem and I hope you find this works for you too.

I am very happy to have stumbled upon this discussion. My husband has suffered from this condition for longer than the 12 years that I have known him. It seems to get progressively worse year after year. He has seen many ENTs, had nasal surgery, taken a number of drugs, all to no avail. I am going to try the combination of digestive enzymes, HCL, and probiotics as mentioned in the last posting. Here's hoping!

Hello all,

I just discovered this forum and I have read each and every one of them, reaching what could be the solution to our problem. The probiotics and HCL. I was diagnosed with GERD in 1998, took acid reducers which worked wonders for a few years, then the meds ruined my digetstive system. The lack of acid was causing malnutrition--food goes in, not properly digested due to lack of acid, then brain fog among many other horrible effects. Since then, I rarely take any GERD meds and just remembered (in my seven years of searching for a cure to what's wrong with me) one of the holistic docs mentioning taking HCL to get more acid in my stomach. So putting together all of my own research and the postfrom Guest on 12/18/09, I will now try eliminating dairy, sugar, most preservatives, take HCL and a good probiotic and see where it takes me. I self diagnosed myself as having Candida overgrowth back in 1999. I went on a cleanse which included ending it with probiotics and felt the best I had ever had in my life at 29. (i did not have the clearing throat thing then, but had chronic fatigue, brain fog, depression and anxiety) It worked, but it was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do. Discipline does not come easy to me. Sooo....as I have been suspecting for the last four years that I have had this stupid clearing throat thing,it seems that the culprit yet again may be Candida overgrowth. Thanks for all the advice and it's a long time comin'. Hopefully we will all try it and be cured. I will keep you posted!

I have this problem. It's been going on out of control for about 5 years now. My throat gets raw and sore but that passes with time and tea. I even get little bumps on my uvula. I think it is related. The Dr did not think anything of my bumps, surely not cancer. They come and go but I always have a least a couple. I have associated this issue with stress. I feel like it could be due to digestion and it does not help that I clear my throat while eating which pushes food up the backside of my nasal passages. I use a neti pot type thing for that. My wife and I have studied the issue experimentally. I do not clear my throat when I am relaxed at home. If I start to talk about work I start clearing my throat. If I talk about the Red Sox, although stressful, no clearing. I feel the lump by the top of my food tub not my lungs. Every morning I was trying to gag myself to cough up mucus which I thought was the problem. I started taking Claritin and the mucus went away but the problem with clearing remained. I think stress creates some of the digestion problem which in turn causes the throat clearing. It does begin to take on a habitual appearance because I will clear my throat in between sentences while talking at work. I get quite spirited while working. After I tell a joke I will clear my throat. the stress of the joke bombing and the anxiety of how it will be received. I worry a lot. So one day I said no more clearing. I actually had a couple full blown panic attacks when I forced myself to stop throat clearing. I may get the sensation to clear but when I go without for a couple days I lose that sensation some. After a week it is gone altogether. Then stress happens and bam I am back in the band.

I seem to have stumbled upon a suppressor for my chronic throat clearing quite by accident. I started using unrefined, cold pressed, organic coconut oil close to two weeks ago. My throat clearing, which drives my family as well as myself crazy has all but stopped. I take a teaspoon in the morning and then a bit throughout the day, especially now before I eat. The sensation is not completely gone but the urge to clear is 95% diminished and what I need to clear I can actually do with just a quiet hard swallow now.

I've dealt and suffered with this for years and years. From what I can tell at this point from using the coconut oil is if you have a well seasoned pan and you want it stripped use coconut oil, because all those years of seasoning will be gone. Seems to work similarly in my throat.

I wasn't looking for coconut oil to cure this but I am so amazed at what it has done.

Hi there. I know you wrote this over a year ago, but I was just wondering if you ever found anything to help the throat clearing? I've been clearing my throat for years and I honestly can't take it anymore. It even scares my one year old when I do it loudly enough. I can't continue on like this. I take some of the meds you take, so your post stood out to me. I've been taking Priolosec for years and that has only helped my heartburn. I also take Synthroid and birth control pills. I'm feeling discouraged that not many people have found relief. I've been to several doctors, including an ENT, and have tried nasal sprays and allergy medications - all to no avail. I want this problem fixed so badly...I would try anything. Please let me know if you have discovered anything that has helped you.

Thanks,

Casey

My husband has the same exact problem and I must be honest we have gotten into quite a few fusses about it. I love my husband to death, but it drives me crazy! I find him in the store also by just listening for him to cough. I can't take a nap bc he always wakes me up clearing his throat. He's been to the doctor( last year) and they gave him an allergy shot (prednezone) and he passed out, hit his head and had a very severe concussion, so I'm not up on bringing him to the doctor again. Anyway, We have made an aggreement to start researching all this on the internet. HE said it feels like he always has a lump in his throat-phlegm in is throat. Hope we can find a cure. I am going to try some NAC and look up candid. I don't know what that is.

hi
my mom has this, now i do.
she finally got relief from a naturopath who told her she had a fungus and treated it.
it is back now but she was good for almost a year after 10 of not being ok.
i've had this chronic throat clearing and feeling of something in my throat since just after my baby was born and, as i read this, i could have cried to read "candida" because, concurrent with the weeks following the babies birth, i was diagnosed with candida in my breasts and everywhere else unmentionable... maybe i never actually got rid of it and this is the newest manifestation. that is hope. i am booking my next appointment with the MD on Wednesday. I'll let you know.

Hello everyone. I am sad for you all because I can truly empathise. I too have this problem.

But I am happy in a way because hearing all your stories makes me realise I am not walking this cursed and horrible journey alone. Nobody I know has this problem and so they cannot truly understand or empathise or sympathise.

I feel like a piece of glue is stuck in my throat. Sometimes it feels a bit lower, between my lung area and my throat. The more I try to clear it, the more stuck it feels. Sometimes it feels like it's being released, but I can never get it out properly and it seems to lodge again and glue itself in the windpipe again.

This has driven me to despair that I even entertain thoughts of suicide. That is how much of an impact this has on my mental health.

It's so frustrating..and sometimes I have a "throat clearing attack" that lasts from 6pm to 2 am. I endure hell during that time.

What's confusing is that sometimes it seems a lot better than other days.

I have tried a lot of things.. Nexium, other stomach acid medication, changing food, avoiding certain food, I even had some allergy medication from a Naturopath, which seems to help sometimes, but other times it does nothing at all to help.

I took an allergy test and I was found to be allergic to dust and wheat. So I stopped eating wheat, but the problem persisted. And I ever tried wearing a mask so as to avoid breathing in dust, but I still have problem.

Is it caused by dust allergy, reflux, stress, anxiety, depression, worry, something else? The answer I do not have, which makes it very frustrating not know for certain exactly what is causing it.

I had chest X-ray and chest CT, nothing was found and shows all clear.

This issue is destroying my life... I feel at times I am going insane, especially when I have an attack at nighttime and cannot go to sleep. I am so loud trying to clear the throat and windpipe that I think my neighbours are hearing me.

I have seen many Doctors, yet still no solution.

I fear there is no solution and that I am under a curse for the rest of my life.

If any of you are a Christian, can you please pray for me? I need relief from this before I reach a stage where I am no longer able to cope.

Thank you everyone.

Tony, your symptoms and feelings of despair are so similar to mine! I empathise with you and with everyone. Mine started five months ago when I swallowed a chunk of apple 'the wrong way' - ever since, I can still feel a stiff, sharp edged flap of apple peel lodged in my windpipe. It's still unbelievably uncomfortable and painful. A moment of carelessness = months of torture.

I've had ENT docs examine my throat with the flexible endoscope, and a couple of weeks ago I even had a rigid bronchoscopy under general anaesthetic. I really thought the surgeon would find and remove it this time. But no, he says there's 'nothing there' and I must have Globus Pharyngeus.

My throat begs to differ. I still feel exactly as if the peel is still stuck. I need to cough it out, but can't - all coughing does is make my trachea hurt like hell! It's difficult to convey how bad it feels to someone who hasn't experienced it. Doctors just don't seem to take it seriously, or even believe me.

I feel completely alone with it now, and desperate for ways to ease the discomfort until it finally deigns to get better. All the things that help a bit - painkillers, diazepam and alcohol - are unfortunately habit-forming so I'm trying to keep them to a minimum. And anyway, they're not a cure - what I really need is to get this wretched thing out of my windpipe, then I'd be fine again! I am ABSOLUTELY DESPERATE for advice and relief. I just want my life back.

Please keep posting how you are getting on. Ask questions if you want, maybe we can help each other.

I have this problem since I was 16. At first, the ENT specialist detected a tonsils in my throat and the "throat clearing" feeling went away for a while after surgery. A couple of weeks later, it came back again but this time the "throat clearing" effect went a bit bottom of my throat.
Went to doctors again and they did an endoscopy test to see what causes it. Lot of terms like acid refluxes etc... has been reported. Took a lot of medicines as per the ENT doctor's advice.
And after several years, I still have the problem and each year it is getting worse :-(

I have suffered from throat clearing all my life, even as a little girl. I have had many of the same experiences as all of you: being found in stores by the sounds of my throat clearing, annoying people around me, etc. When I was working on my graduate degree, I had to teach a huge class (150+) of freshman history. I was nervous and couldn't go for more than a minute without having to clear my throat, but since I was on a very sensitive mic, I had to keep switching it off to clear, and then switching it back on to talk, then off to clear, and so forth and so on. It was a very long class....

I recently was passed over for a job which at first baffled me, until I remembered was probably due to the clearing. I was the only person picked for an interview, and I felt I did a good job, but I had to hurry a bit because of bad weather and not being able to find the office at first, so I had to run up the stairs to the office. Running or hurrying makes the clearing worse, so now I was clearing a mile a minute, and the more I tried to stop, the less I could control it. The receptionist looked at me strangely, then offered to get me some water and obviously wanted an explanation. I tried to pass it off lightly, but being so self-conscious made that impossible. The office (a one man legal practice) only had the reception area and the attorney's office, so the lawyer sat in her office with the door open, listening to me hack for the whole 20 minutes I waited.

During my life I've taken various different anti-depressants, been through the usual colds and flu, had my tonsils out when I was 7 years old, gotten allergy tested and discovered I was allergic to cats (only), had pets, had no pets, taken Zyrtec (presently), been through a 3-4 year period where I was lactose intolerant and so ate no dairy whatsoever, BUT NEVER has the throat clearing left me. My sons don't clear their throats, and neither did their father, to whom I was married for 20 years.

If there is anything amusing about all this, it's that now I am dating a man who is also a throat clearer. I remember being rather excited when we realized that we both do this--it was like meeting an old friend. Both of us clear worse after eating, but some ingredients seem to be worse than others. Eating at home rarely has this effect (I mostly cook from scratch and don't use any processed meals, frozen or canned foods, etc.). And some restaurants aren't too bad, but some are horrible!! I recall McDonald's (never go there if I can help it) as being one of the absolute worst!! Sometimes, as we drive away from a lovely dinner out at a beautiful restaurant, we'll both crank up with the throat clearing without realizing that we're doing it, but eventually we'll notice ourselves in concert and agree, "That's a throat-clearing restaurant!" "Yep, it's a throat-clearer."

I'm in law school and am very anxious to stop this distracting business. It will take away from the power and force of my argument if I'm always hacking away. If anybody learns anything new and helpful, please pass it along.
