Me too! Changed our life. Finally something that allows my son to work through frustration and actually be able to learn coping strategies. :)

Hello. My son has been on Clonidine now for several weeks. We were a 1/2 tablet and now .1mg. The 1/2 did not work very well. I have noticed he is making weird vocalization throughout the day. We have never had this. And regression is sensory seeking behavior and fussiness. He does however not wake up at 2am for the day anymore. I am not sure what to do....can all this be b/c of the new med?

Hi, I agree with you. My son has had problems with the stimulants and the doctors want to try this now so I did my own research and it makes sense that it would work... Especially when I saw the links between the nervous system, blood sugars and Parkinson's and how the inhibitors work... I found it really interesting because Parkinsons runs in our family, as does autism, and I myself have had pancreatic surgery for an insulinoma. There are too many coincidences regarding the central nervous system and how this drug works for me to just discount it...

My son started taking it at age 4. But for sleep. It does knock him out about 1/2 hour after he takes it it. I would consider how long he has been taking it....maybe his system needs to adjust. And talk to your doctor if it has been a couple weeks about dosage. It did improve my sons sleep, I belong to a large local support group for my area and lots of parents are also using for behavior with success. It seems to not have any lasting side effects for these kiddos that have been on it for quite awhile. That is comforting. Maybe you just need to find the right dosage....best of wishes

I have 2 boys - 1.5 yrs apart - both non verbal in nappies and autistic. I gave them 1 tablet each this morning and the positive effects were seen inmmediately! I found your chat via an amazing blog that has helped a lot. In regards to sleeping, uncooked cornstarch before bedtime (and i also give it during the day) helps tremendously with this. Just mix it with yoghurt - NOT ORANGE JUICE - and give it to them cold. As soon as it heats up it doesnt work as well. Also, NAC has helped us a lot. Autism is so weird and wonderful, no one can say what will/will not work. But some things generally work accross the board - even if you use them for autism and it was intended to lower blood pressure. Garlic is generally used as a herb, but it is also found in multivitamins and can boost the immune system. Just because something is mainly used for one problem, doesnt mean it cannot have other uses as well.

Yes, it is blood pressure medicine but like most drugs can be used for numerous things. My son has adhd and autism and has trouble sleeping . He is on concerta and takes clonidine at night if not for this my son would be awake all night long. I give at 6p and by 9p he falling asleep. My experiance it works and is known to give to kids w adhd and autism for purpose of sleep.

My daughter is on the clonidine patch .1 mg. It is three weeks now and I do not see much of a change. Pharmacist told me it could take one month to see the difference. Any one use the patches.

I'm sure the uneducated poster was thinking of Klonipin which sounds like clonidine, and IS a narcotic and a sedative (benzodiazepine).
As a Pharmacist I thought you might have caught the mistake. I'm a pharmacy TECH and sure that's what the poster meant. Still, the poster made a rash statement even if they were confusing the two drugs.
