I don't know yet but they gave me a guess and said that it would cost about 8000 dollars and that's when they said if the surgery went well and they only had to go in with the small cuts or what ever and then then they had to open me up and do it the old fashion way so its only going to cost more because they had to do both so the price is only going to go up. it was done in Galveston Texas UTMB hospital. I haven't got the bill in the mail yet but it know that its going to be more then i thought it was going to be, only because they had to do both ways to get it done. if your doctor tells you he might have to do both because they look pretty bad i say, just let them do it where they just cut you open because that is what thy are going to do and its a lot more money it they have to do both...

I had inguinal hernia surgery 2 weeks ago. It was the safer tension free repair (with mesh) and it was absolutely free (free healthcare). I'm from Portugal btw.

I think you guys in the States are being ripped off.

As for the cost, Japanese heath insurance holders are 70% covered. These patients will pay approximately 74,000 yen (900 USD) in total. If you don't have the insurance, you have to pay approximately 250,000 yen (3,000 USD)in total. There may be some variances. I was surgically repaired using the direct Kugel patch method.

It's still pretty expensive if you don't have insurance

Have you considered requesting the hospital to bill you at the Medicare rate? If you can't/they won't and you have to declare medical bankruptcy, be VERY careful to keep track of your expenses. Your attorney will first attempt to negotiate a lower bill for you and the hospital could accept this if it's made clear to them that the alternative is to receive nothing at all. However, if the attempt is successful, be aware that any debt "forgiveness" will be reported as income to the IRS. If you do go the bankruptcy route, be careful to keep to the same spending/bill payment patterns you followed before the surgery. If you file bankruptcy, any obligations including credit cards will HAVE to be included, even though you want to pay them in full. And paying down Mastercard/Visa/whoever to minimize the obligation could backfire, since the hospital would argue that if you can pay the credit card, you can pay them.
