Hello! I suffer from low myopia and my doctor recommended eyeglasses. I don’t wear them all the time since he told me I could’ do so. My mother insists on wearing glasses all the time. I check my eyes once a year and there is always mild increase of my myopia. My mother tells me I could go blind with my myopia getting worse. I don’t think this is possible, isn’t it?

Hello! You haven’t said which degree of myopia is diagnosed in your case, but since you said it was low I assume it was not more than -3 diopters. You doctor probably told you that most nearsightedness stabilized at a mild to moderate level. It often gets worse until the late teens when it usually stabilizes. Since your myopia is low there is no need to worry. Around 40% of the population has myopia or will develop it at some time in their lives. Myopia may be a bother but it is not a disease; and your eyes are most probably perfectly healthy. People who have severe myopia or pathological myopia have an increased risk of cataracts, glaucoma and retinal detachment which may endanger their eyesight. But, the risk is really quite low.
