Does a syphilis chancre's initially appear as open chancre?

Is it possible for it to initially appear as a lump and then later burst open into a chancre?

I noticed had a lump on my penis shaft 2 or 3 days after sexual activity. I scratched it off and thus the doctor could not examine it. I am really worried now.
