Health Canada officials have announced that a counterfeit Colgate is being sold around Canada. It had been found to contain harmful bacteria. The counterfeit products were sold under names Colgate Fluoride Toothpaste Herbal and Colgate Fluoride Toothpaste Maximum Cavity Protection and labeled "Manufactured in South Africa." These products also have misspellings on the packages such as "isclinically" "SOUTH AFRLCA" and "South African Dental Assoxiation."

The federal agency announced that testing would show how high contamination was and advised consumers to refrain from buying and using these products because if the presence of bacteria were confirmed, it could pose a great health risk.

Consumers were advised to keep the products away from children, to seal the tubes and put them in sealed bags as well as wash their hands well after handling the tube.

The counterfeit toothpastes have been sold in the chain "Everything for a Dollar Store.” All the products have been removed from the shelves.
The genuine Colgate toothpaste approved for sale in Canada is safe and is labeled in English and French. It contains either an eight-digit Drug Identification Number (DIN) or a Natural Product Number (NPN) and consumers should recognize it by the numbers.
