AND btw I did not test positive for a wheat allergy. However the allergist said that food sensitivities can be very real and not show up as "true" allergies on tests. There is no way to test for them, you just have to experiment with your diet and see what happens. Other common problem foods are dairy and soy. However I am fine with those.
I strongly advise an elimination diet if the gluten free doesn't work within a few weeks. It's a hassle but well worth it if you can find out whether that's the real root of the problem.

Now that I dont touch my face unnecessarily and scratch it and its away from my hair, I wash my hair with lemon and a herbal shampoo and keep away from dandruff, and to regain my complexion back on that portion, I use very less quantity of hydrocortisone cream - Lycor 1% as it isnt much concentrated compared to 2% and higher degrees and the reviews read it is harmful if used for a prolonged period of time. But I decided to risk myself because I had the very habbit of trying every other cream and home remedies and nothing actually worked for years. but to my surprise, this worked for me. My itching completely stopped and my skin is regaining its glow, you know wht my mom's doctor who recomended the plastic surgeon said.. She says it has almost faded away and asked me for the cream name. Iam almost flying now. You may try this too as the Lycor cream i am using is cheap too (not more than 50 Rupees) and you may happy to apply very little on the skin. Well, Sorry, I am unaware of the problem that you have near your eyes.

I had similar symptoms: puffy and cracked eyes and cracked corners of my mouth. I knew that the cracked corners of my mouth had to do with vitamin B and iron deficiency, but I wanted to figure out what causes this deficiency. I also hadn't realized that these problems--with the eyes AND the mouth--could be related until I stumbled upon your post. I went to the doctor's, and that was kind of pointless. She prescribed me cortisone cream for eyes. I never used it. What I did is I eliminated all bread and pasta from my diet. In three days my eyes got better. When I came back, she noticed the difference immediately and asked if it was the cream. She was surprised when I told her that it's gluten.
While I do not have celiac disease (the test came out negative), I noticed that if I do not eat bread, my eyes and mouth feel much, much, much better. If your body cannot digest gluten, your intestines cannot absorb nutrients, and you start having symptoms like you are describing. Once I stopped consuming gluten and the problems cleared, just out of curiosity I ate a little bit of wheat pasta, and my eyes got all puffy and little tiny cracks started developing. That was a sign to me that my self-diagnosis was correct.
In any case, I realize that your post is over a year old, but I hope this helps. Gluten is found in wheat, rye, barley, and often oats. I know, it's a pain to switch to gluten-free diet and find substitutes. I'm just starting to figure it out myself. However, by eliminating ALL sources of gluten in the beginning, I gave my body time to "come to," and now that I'm feeling better, I can start thinking about substitutes. Good luck to you. And thank you once again for starting this discussion thread. It really helped me in my research of this subject.

I had this problem. I stopped using all creams except for aveeno eczema lotion and stopped consuming dairy. Problem solved. Also, I have to stay away from dust for the most part. Good luck.
