During my last menstruation my stool was very dark. I wasn’t paid much attention before but I don’t think it was dark before. I am not sure is there a reason for worry. Anyway I was just wondering what could be the reason for dark stool during menstruation. Any suggestions?

Dark stool usually means blood and it can originate anywhere along the intestinal tract, but black stool usually means that the blood is coming from the upper part of the tract. At least 2 Tablespoons of blood must have been lost in order to make the stool black. However, the ingestion of black licorice, lead, Pepto-Bismol, or blueberries can cause black stools or false melena. I am not sure if it is important fact that it occurred during menstruation, but you should check your GI track.
