Every few nights, sometimes for multiple nights in a row, deep inside my left ear (only ever my left ear), it will start to have this excruciating burning pain partway through the night.
It seems to be somewhat cyclical...it will be fine for several nights in a row, and then randomly hurt. I've kept a log and it doesn't have a rhyme or reason to rim what I can tell.
This has been going on for almost 2 years. I've seen many doctors, ENT's, I've had an MRI, a CT scan, I've seeta neurologist. Everyone says my ear looks completely healthy. I was in gabapentin for a while (nerve blocker) but it didn't seem to help. The pain would still go through it's random, cyclical occurances.
I have to sleep with 4 pillows, on my right side (the opposite side) or it will get triggered also. After 2 years, I have all sorts of other body issues from having to sleep super elevated and only on one side. When it starts to hurt, the only thing that helps is being upright. No painkillers, decongestants, etc work.
I also have another different symptom that's super hard to describe. It's different but I can tell it's related. Sometimes, when I'm upright, something in my ear (by something I mean my bones , cartilage or something belonging to me ear) will get "caught" or "stuck" (that's the best way I can describe it) and if I tilt my head up when that happens, it really hurts, or sometimes releases. It's very strange and I can usually trigger that "stuck" occurance by massaging the back ofy ear, just above the ear lobe a certain way. When this stuck feeling happens, it hurts in the same spot that it does at night.
My physio has some some dry needling in my jaw and work on my pallette but he doesn't think it's TMJ, nor does my dental surgeon. Oh ya, I got the wisdom teeth (top and bottom) pulled on that side, just in case. That didn't solve the problem. Neither did a mouth guard.
No one can give me answers and this is so frustrating and painful to deal with. Has anyone had a solution for this?
