At 56 I was stricken suddenly and severely with delayed pressure urticaria. That's when my life of hell began. I don't need to go into the list of disabling symptoms and useless attempts to control them. I'm sure you know them if you are reading this.
To make a long story short, after going to several doctors with no success I began scouring the internet for answers. After six months of searching I found a medical abstract on a hospitalized patient in Italy who had DPU which had been cured. She had an intestinal parasite called blastocystis hominus and was given a course of some antibiotic.
Upon seeing this I immediately had an O&P test done by a local lab and not only did I have Blastocystis hominis I also had Dientamoeba fragilis . Yikes!
I took the results immediately to an infectious disease doctor. He put me on a short course of doxycyline and the symptoms started to slowly disappear. He said my immune system was HOT and it might take six months for the symptoms to go away entirely. Sure enough, almost six months later all the DPU and other Chronic Urticaria were gone!!!!!
It has now been almost two years and I have had NO FURTHER PROBLEMS!!!
I'm not saying this will be the pathway to a cure for you BUT IT MIGHT!
Good luck and God Bless!
Note: Keep in mind that most medical literature says there is no known cause, no known treatment and no known cure for this rare disease.
Some notes on my experience:
* Do NOT take NSAIDS for pain. They will aggravate the condition
* For best relief use cold compresses. The lesions will be hot which will draw the coldness from the towel quickly so have extra towel ready in the fridge. As a towel gets warm (and it will quickly) apply another. The trick is to apply new, cold towels several times. Yes, this will be a miserable experience because likely you will have fever and chills when you do this. But it should help. This is the ONLY thing that ever helped me.

Hello Miss Downsouth,
I've had chronic urticaria (hives) since Dec 2012. It began during the course of a cold. I had a cough that just wouldn't go away. After being sick for 3 weeks I developed hives. I assumed this was related, but in retrospect maybe not. I went to the doctor and was put on antibiotics. The cold symptoms went away, but the hives persisted. After some tests learned I had Blastocystis hominis. I also have found a few medical abstracts that tie Blasto to urticaria. I suggested this to my doctor, who agreed it's a possibility. I went on antibiotics again, specifically to kill the controversial parasite. I've been tested since and i'm clear of the parasite, but of course the hives persist. It's been 3 months since talking the antibiotics. I'm hoping that your doctors theory about the immune system being "hot" is true. And that it could take 6 months for the symptoms to clear. It seems strange that it would take that long, but i'm hoping it's true. You seem to have had a much worse time them i'm having. Hives are my only symptom. It's usually in the morning, but not always. And often the same patterns in the same places. I definitely have physical urticaria. It I scratch myself anywhere I can create hives.
However, since Blasto is so common and often asymptomatic, I may be reacting to something else. I've changed all my products to hypoallergenic. I've even done diets to eliminate food allergies. However, from what i've read chronic hives are rarely from allergies.
Thanks for your post
