Hi, my sister is 36 years old and she is suffering from bipolar disorder. Her psychiatrist prescribed her Depakote and she started to use it few weeks ago. This medication showed some improvements but doctor told her that she had to higher doses of Depakote to get full therapy effects. In the last several days my sister started to feel irregular heart beats and she complained about it. I would like to know if Depakote may cause this.

Not all medications are suitable for everyone. I have been on depakote in the past and had heart palpitations and tachycardia, and chest pains that caused me to stop taking them (not to mention the fact that my hair was falling out in clumps!) and start lithium instead (that with slow titration I tolerated well)
Palpitations are not serious types of arrhythmia though, so if that's the only side effect, it may be worth sticking with it, but let the dr. know.

Hi, Depakote is very good medication for this type of disorder. I know that because my friend has similar problem like your sister does, and it helped him a lot. He didn't have irregular heart rhythm till now and he is using this medication for more than year. However it would be the best that she makes ECG and consult her doctor about it.
