My mom has suffered from diabetes all her life, and I am sad to say that her condition has started to deteriorate a lot recently. Among other things, she was told that she has diabetic retinopathy. This is something I have heard about once or twice, but I don't really understand the implications. Can anyone here please tell me about the treatment options?

In the early stages of diabetic retinopathy, no treatment might be needed at all, but the eye doctor will keep an "eye" on the development of the condition, so to speak :-). (OK, not funny I know, but I couldn't resist that one!) Later on, there are different surgical options, of which I think laser treatment is the least interfering option. It does not work for everybody though.
