My child had a surgery 4 weeks ago and has developed an infection because of three stitches which have not dissolved. His on antibiotics now and I need to be advised what to do because I cannot pull them out or even try to because the stitches are on his private part. I have been to the doctor who needs to refer me back to the surgeons, but it will take at least 2 weeks. I need some help, why these stitches doesn’t coming out?

Your child had an operation, so call the surgeon, don’t wait for 2 weeks. Your doctor may not realize that absorbable stitches sometimes cause a reaction called a "stitch abscess". The body uses the same process to dissolve the stitches that it uses to fight an infection. However, some people's bodies do not dissolve the dissolvable stitches. But they treat the stitches like a foreign body and when that happens, an infection can develop. It's my understanding that it takes about 3 weeks for them to dissolve.

Dissolvable stitches do NOT always dissolve. My mother, brother and myself have had stitches come to the skin surface 10 years after surgery. My surgeons assured me he used dissolvable stitches, but they do not dissolve on us. Maybe body chemistry?
