My arms, legs and torso broke out in hives (a rash). I dealt with it via steroids & cream but the itchiness remains. My arms are mainly itchy at the joints, i.e. where the forearm meets the upper arm. The area just beneath the underarm is also affected. My legs are itchy at the back of the knees.
Never had a problem with food allergies in the past.

Itchy hives (also known as urticaria) can be caused by many things, including food allergies. However, it's not easy to confirm the cause without proper testing. If you recently ate something new or something known to commonly cause allergies (like peanuts, shellfish, dairy, etc.), it might be worth considering a food allergy.
However, hives can also be triggered by many other factors, such as:
- Other types of allergies (like to certain medications, pet dander, pollen)
- Infections
- Stress
- Certain illnesses like autoimmune diseases
- Physical triggers, like pressure, cold, heat, exercise, or sun exposure
It's important to note that sometimes, the cause of hives isn't found. This is known as idiopathic urticaria.
As for the remaining itchiness after the rash, it's not unusual. Steroids and creams can help reduce inflammation and rash, but sometimes the itchiness persists for a while. Over-the-counter antihistamines might help with the itching, but you should check with a healthcare provider to make sure these are safe and suitable for you.
If your symptoms persist, worsen, or if you experience other symptoms like difficulty breathing, dizziness, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue, seek medical help immediately, as these can be signs of a severe allergic reaction.
