Please I need some help! I have been recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, quite at young age for this I guess , I’m 45 years old, and the fact is that I didn’t feel anything! It was a routine exam from my job!. But I’m obese! So actually I knew already that this could happen. I agree with the GP I will try to lose some weight the coming months.  Besides of feeling guilty about not having taken care of myself and my health now I’m afraid I won’t be able to take care of my family! I earn my money driving a truck every day, I’ve heard that driving and diabetes can be a problem. I’m so worried about it. Last thing I need now is losing my job! Help pls!

First of all, you will very probably be able to keep on driving your truck. The whole story about driving and diabetes has more to do with having complications of diabetes that makes driving more dangerous. You said you didn’t (don’t) feel anything, so probably you don’t have complications. First of all we talk about your eyes, they will be checked because there’s one of the complications from diabetes. Secondly the doctor will want to see if you can feel well the pedals (which you probably can) because of diabetic neuropathy (altering how your nerves work). Once you have been checked for this there will be no counter indications to drive. But there will be special caution  if you start taking medications. Some medications have the side effect hypoglycemia (too low blood sugar) which can alter your level of consciousness, so you don’t want to have this while driving (not only a truck, but also a regular car). So if you go to medications you will be instructed how to avoid hypos. Last point is that depending where you live there are special laws regarding driving and diabetes, you will have to check at your local office. Take care of yourself!
