My 5 month old grandson's white blood cell count is elevated, It was 18,000 on his 6 month doctor's visit, a week later it was 20,000...what could this mean? He is a picture of health, eats good, sleeps through the night and is doing everything he should be doing. He has a bad cough; but no fever. A very worried grandmother.!

Thanks

Have you asked the doctor about your concerns? I believe that it is nothing especially if he doesn’t have fever or some other symptoms. But if you are still worried maybe you should seek second opinion? Just to be rest assured that everything is fine. And what are parents thinking about this? Are they concerned as well?

I have read that an increased production of white blood cells usually happens when a body is fighting an infection so maybe this is an answer to increased number of white blood cells in your grandson’s organism.

There are few more conditions which are causing elevated blood cell count like immune system disorder and bone marrow disease but you shouldn’t be thinking about this. Instead concentrate on noticing some other symptoms if there are any and if not stop been to worried grandmother and enjoy in your grandson.
