I‘ve been suffering from epilepsy for years. I wanted to get pregnant and I was thinking to switch my therapy on depakote, but then I was told not to take depakote while I was trying to get pregnant. They told me that depakote is not a safe drug to be on while pregnant. I am not sure now what to do.

I also suffer from epilepsy and have 3 healthy children and took Depakote while pregnant with my first child. I also breast fed her with no problems. My seizures actually stopped while I was pregnant for the other 2, but my OB's considered me to be "high risk" and followed me closely. You'll find that being on Depakote only raises your risk of neural tube defects by only a few % above the normal population. I saw an epileptologist and a genetic counselor prior to getting pregnant to weigh risks.
