This is my 13th week and I've been having this excess saliva 3 or 4 weeks back. Initially I would just feel a bitter taste in my mouth and after that the bitter taste gradually went away and here comes the excess saliva.
I would just spit into a cup at home or a plastic bag at work. It seems like not many people have this during pregnancy.
At night I couldn't sleep because I am spitting into a cup every few minutes for an hour or so. This makes me really sleepy and tired the next day for work. Swallowing the saliva makes me sick especially when there are "bubbles" in the saliva because swallowing the bubbles really makes me vomit.
I don't experience the excess saliva thingy when I wake up in the morning with an empty stomach. I get lots of the excess saliva and feel nausea about it especially after lunch time and dinner.
Hopefully this problem will go away soon. I can't imagine not speaking and spitting all the time for another 6 months or so...

I was fed up of my wife spitting all over all the time. I searched all over the internet but non of the solutions seemed to work. Then today she decided to chew some chewing gum, mint flavour, and voila! Problem solved (at least during the day)

Having the same problem at 9 weeks of my third pregnancy. This is an unplanned pregnancy (totally unexpected at age 41). I did not have this with my first 2 pregnancies (boys). I am hoping that this unfortunate symptom indicates that I may be having a girl. Hope everyone has a healthy pregnancy.

Hello Ladies!
I have the same problem with spiting all the time. Driving me crazy!!!!! Sick and spiting!!!
What I got is alka seltzer! Once drop in a 6oz of water every 4 hours when needed. The problem with this is when you drink or eat something, it can start the spiting problem all over again. So if you need a little rest drink the alka seltzer after a meal if you can keep it down. I'll wait like 20 to 30 minutes after each meal or drink to get a break from spiting. So if it works for you please post and let us know. THanks.

Hi, i am currently 12 weeks pregnant and facing the same problem too. this is my first pregnancy, and all this experience is new to me. but this excessive salivating really annoys me. i tried spitting but it was too disgusting. i tried drinking water but it just makes it worst. basically i tried almost everything. but what actually works for me is brushing my teeth and eating some snacks like crackers with chocolate cream. it helps reduce the salivation a bit. just hope this will end at the end of my first trimester.

I too have exactly same problem. My Dr says its more of a psychological problem and I should simply try to swallow the excessive saliva. But my mouth fills completely with Saliva, how can I swallow so much of saliva that too when my mouth is filled with a bad bitter taste due to nausea. No one can understand what a pregnant lady goes through, i feel like crying :(

Shalini- i know what you are going through! same issue and its my 20th week. I am getting excess saliva and as well as thick saliva like substance coming from the throat. Prepare yourself to face it till the end of pregnancy (i.e worst case scenario) and if gets better, nothing like it! Dont be disheartened, there is light at end of the tunnel. Many women say it goes away as soon as you deliver! Some more time!

Hello everyone,
i did some research, and with my personal try-and-fails, I kind feel that when you start to have saliva in your mouth, it's about time to eat a little, but never too much.i think its baby tell limping you: hey mom, I need something now! we start to produce saliva because our stomach is empty with too much acid, saliva is a natural antacid so if you allow me to say it does not matter how gross it is, we suppose to swallow it rather than spit it out! (I know, I know). So my conclusion is, eat a little when you start to feel excessive saliva, for me, yogurt is my life saver.
hope it helps!

My daughter is 22 years old soon. I still vividly remember having this problem of excess saliva while pregnant. I spoke to every medical person I came in contact with and none knew what I was talking about. My doctor referred me to the dentist. Also I knew no one else who had suffered the same so I thought I was some strange case. I'm surprised doctors still don't know about it as I have since looked it up (and thus came to this site) and it is pretty common apparently. Unfortunately there does not seem to be a remedy though.
