I have been having a mysterious lump hit me in the ribs either right below breast bone or slightly to the right of that first happened when tying my shoes 3 months ago. But continues to happen. Feels like my ribs come crashing down on a babies head, but I am not pregnant. No noticed pain in back or shoulders. No symptoms of diahrea or constipation. I do have GERD symptoms especially when lying down, like there is food in my throat and some more severe acid reflux than normal but it's intermittent and the pressure under the ribs is constant. The thing that pops out happens irregularly maybe every other week to once a month. I've had an ultrasound and CT with contrast, no significant results. I am scheduled for an endoscopy and colonoscopy tomorrow. I thought it was a hiatal hernia, but am not sure. One thing I didn't see others mention is that my spouse can't put his arm around me on my waist (right side) when we are both lying on our side it increases the pressure to be painful and gives me terrible heartburn. I am overweight 5'2" 210lbs. No gallbladder issues have been found in my bloodwork or CT scan. Non smoker, don't drink alcohol. Trying to loose weight, have cut sugars, carbs and gluten from my diet recently. Have added meal replacement shakes in the mornings to replace breakfast. Have begun exercising 3-4 times per week 30 min/day.
Here's hoping for answers. I know not worrying and losing weight may make it all go away, but the constant pressure is hard to ignore. One user said massage therapy and Pilates healed her, good for her. I am a firm believer in homeopathic remedies, but I also need answers or at least to be sure there is nothing serious going on.

Hi, I can relate to many, I am in the middle of testing and ironically I do biopsy reports for GI and this is a new phenomenon it seems. I don't have a gallbladder and have permanent inflammation since 2012 where I must be on a stomach glue called prevalite in order not to keep going to the bathroom. please tell me Guess 22 days ago how your endoscopy went. I was told in the ER two days ago, if it's smaller hernia it won't show on CT scan. thanks.

I also didn't get a chance to break down all the issues. I had fatty liver deposits, over weight, female, over 45 years old, ovarian cyst that is none related - same folding pain, uncomfortable. Happened right after my pancreatic attack. I can't have Verberzi, which almost killed me and gave me the pancreatic attack. Apparently its a new med for diarrhea. please beware of that. So I spent 4 days in hospital after that was tried, then.. this muscle spasm like moving thing occurred a ew days after coming out the hospital. Then nothing for a year and few months and now it's back with a vengeance. They ER gave me stuff for acid reflux but I doubt that is what it is, but not sure. MY GI seems puzzled and my primary care doc things its a hernia near the excision area from them prob with scar tissue that has torn and that feeling is my guts going through the hole then going back when I adjust. I feeling a burning cutting pain now, for 1 week in the upper right area.. I will post the results and wish everyone good luck. from NYC biopsy transcriptionist.

I'm experience similar symptoms for the past 4 yrs. after bending over I will randomly get this acute muscle spasm on top of my right rib cage towards the center of my chest. The muscle bunches up in a knot then slowly relaxes. That area will remain sore for a day or two. This last time the pain has remained constant and it's been a week. Going to dr tomorrow. Nothing I've treated the area with has helped: Advil, Aleve, ice, heat. Praying it's. Nothing serious.

I have had the same tingling, balloon like oressure under my right rib for a month. Sometimes it radiates to my right upper back. Mostly while sitting up or leaning forward. US, Ct scan, blood work all negative. I have been a nurse for 14 yrs and can't put these symptoms together. This makes me feels nuts. I had a chest x ray of my right lung today, not sure yet of the results. I came across diaphragmatic hernias, though congenital, can occur in adults. It just makes sense that possibly my liver or small intestine, pushing up through a weakened diaphragm, pushing on the base of the right lung.

hi. You've described EXACTLY what happens to me. It goes away after a few minutes, but I can't move until it subsides. I have to hold my breath. If feel like an organ is "caught" under a rib cage, or the rib cage needs to be "repositioned" on top of he spine. No one understands what happens. It occurs when I bend over too far, from a sitting position, not necessarily from standing up and bending over to pick up a toy. (I think it hits older women..as it started in my 50's) never had this happen before that time. Its happened about 10 times over the last decade, i'm more careful not to bend over while sitting in the tub to wash my head under the faucet. That will do it everytime! For the first time last night, I was adjusting the back pillow in bed, so I could lean against the headboard when it happened, but this time the pain didn't subside...I couldn't move, I had to stay in a 45 degree angle until it slowly "uncramped" but it's more than a cramp or charlie horse, it's like something shifts. I've never had an MRI, insurance won't cover it. No doctor will order that just because I've described this excruciating pain "once in a while"...it's not constant so they won't refer me to a specialist. They said it was muscular. But it's NOT. So scared and I just never bend over. My mother lived to 94 and I never heard her mention such a pain once. Maybe she had it but I never saw this happen to her either. Please let me know if you find out what's causing your pain?

Splenic Flexure Syndrome is related to IBD. Not this type of "catching" that causes spasmodic muscular stiffening, or a temporal feeling of severe pressure pushing on the rib cage. But thanks for suggestion

feel better...we're all having that same symptom. It sure sucks getting old. My feeling of something getting "stuck" under my rib cage in the exact spot you mentioned--it's not constipation or related to medication. It's has something to do with ur muscle/skeletal scaffolding and i think old age is creeping in to tell us that it's not as strong of a support as it used to be. It's a temporary spasmodic episode that happens to our muscles, because they're not as supportive as they used to be...it's not a floating organ, it's like a charlie horse, and it would probably go away if we could strengthen our core, but age kind of works against us doing that. Take is slow, don't bend, and ask your doc what kinds of cardio exercise you can do to strengthen your hear muscle so you can begin to work on your core muscles of the chest and skeletal torso area.

Exactly!!! It's like you have to pick up your skeleton and set it back on the spine in order for that weird pain to subside. You stop breathing while it's subsiding. OLD AGE????
Never had it before my 50's and now I'm in my 60's and i just avoid bending over from a sitting position. It can happen by twisting but usually, when I bend my torso forward or twist my torso. There were no residual muscle pains after it subsided until yesterday when it happened while laying in bed and just trying to adjust a pillow behind my back. That sudden "caught" feeling- was so severe, I had to stop breathing, arch backward and remain that way for 10 minutes, and every time I thought it was over, it started again. That lasted about an hour, but today my entire back and torso ache!!!

I had gained weight, felt bloated and couldn't eat a lot. I went to doc who ran all sorts of tests. Hiatal hernia and some ulcers (small) were found. Then a few years ago I had a soft, movable lump form on my right rib cage. Doc said it was a large lipoma and that I shouldn't worry. Two years later, I have again the weight gain with very little food, bloating, pain in my entire chest cavity, especially under the heart notch. Burning sensation with tightness is common. Will once again go for tests.
