I am crying just reading these posts. I am only 21 years old, 5 foot 4, I weigh about 105, I am skinny but not to the point of being unhealthy, no kids, never been pregnant, and I have the exact same problem as all of you women. The flu like period symptoms and the doctor telling me over and over to exercise more, take MORE vitamins, and take midol for a few days before it begins. pop some more ibuprofen and hydrocodone! What they don't understand is that it is impossible for most of us to do any of these things, because we are SICK as HELL for days and days and cannot even hold down a sip of water, let alone go for a jog or take some huge nasty pills! Sick to the point that we are missing work and sleeping for days! It is outrageous that "nothing" can be done to help so many women who have turned to googling their symptoms, in hope that maybe someone else out there can help! If we do not have endometriosis, it's not being caused by ovarian cysts, and it's not psychosomatic, then what the F*** is it?? Will there ever be a cure? I sure as hell hope so, because it is absolutely not Ok or normal to be sick in bed with a fever, nausea, and debilitating cramps just because you got your damn period!! It's something every female deals with, and you don't often hear of extreme flu-like symptoms that keep you in bed for up to a week. Until something can be done, all we can do is join together and share tips, stories, etc... I am very glad I stumbled upon this website, I no longer feel alone! :-D

I am 38 and have never had issues with my periond until about 5 months back. I started having these flu like symptoms about a week before my period and it stops right on the first day of my period. I have a few friends about the same age who have similar symptoms. Incidentally all of us have the IUD fitted. I have had the IUD for about 2 1/2 years and I never had any such symptoms until 5 months back. Now, I am wondering if this has anything to do with the IUD.

I just wonder, does anyone else out there with thid problem have the IUD fitted????

Wow -- I thought I was crazy the 1st few monthsthat I got flu symptoms with my PMS, then I wondered if anyone else ever experienced it. I asked a l lot of women on my roller derby league & they all thought it was crazy too. One suggested I maybe had thrush, but I've never had yeast problems, so that seemed weird to me. My husband feels great sympathy for him every month, but I guarantee you my new boss won't.

I'm an athlete. I eat well. I take great care of myself. But I've literally had a sore throat & flu symptoms now since my last period -- & I'm on the current one now, so that's a month! I wonder if we have any commonalities? I'm 36, no children, been on the Pill most of the last 2 decades, major mood swings with the PMS & flu symptoms, periods have been very irregular the last several months & are often followed by abdminal pains.... I'm trying to get an appt. with my gyno next week to go ove the last few months of personal hell. But since she always makes me feel like I'm a little crazy, I'm not looking forward to it. Will update if I get any news.

i wanna thank everyone for putting this info up; its been a great help! though i havent had kids or done any breastfeeding and am still under eighteen, i am having the exact same symptoms for almost every period now. its extremely difficult to continue to go to run in practice everyday after school and i find myself totally dead in class....so what can i do? theres nothing much else that i have found on the internet thats helping me but i dont think i can compare to the solutions that are meant for women older than my age. yet i cant live with the constant headaches, nausea, body aches, weakness in the joints and limbs, sore throats, and depressive mood swings. reading how these odd symptoms should normally start when one is older has got me a little scared. PLEASE HELP!!!

I checked back to see if anyone had any new information. I am so "sick" and tired of being sick and tired two weeks out of every month. I talked to my doctor about this and he looked back, and sure enough just about every month I was in there for a sore throat, sinus issues, ear infections, all around the same time. And that didn't include all the times I sucked it up and was just sick. He told me I was run down, with my husband being deployed and taking care of everything in my own. He told me to monitor it once he comes home... gee, thanks, I guess I'll wait a whole year! Now I stack up on VitC and Echanasia (sp?) along with a mulit and an antidepressent. (zoloft) still get sick a few days before my period and it lasts for about a weeks or two... we'll keep trying ladies. Between all of us hopefully we can figure this out!

this is the first time these flu like symptoms have shown up with my period. i was beginning to believe I had the flu for real. But After reading these posts, Im not so sure anymore. I too have small children who are being neglected by their father but I cannot risk infecting them if what I am experiencing is contagious. interestingly enough my period was early by at least 10 days. i initilly thought the flu made me come on early, but perhaps its the irregular period that is causing the flu symptoms. a previous poster noticed that women are googling their conditions more and more, and we should. the docs know NOTHING. their whole goal is to get you to buy pharm products and schedule more visits. we may be each other's best support since we know first hand how serious this really is.

Sickofbeingsick, I have a long-overdue appt with my gynecologist in 2 weeks. If she has any clues as to our weird condition, I'll report.

I hate to say it, but everytime I've had a male doctor, he's questioned my knowledge of what's going on with my body. Even my current sports doc -- when I told him I had excruciating pain in my shoulders, he said, "Well, it's probably just sore from overuse." But when he sent me for x-rays, he saw that my joint was impinged -- the bones rub together -- & then conducted tests in which he found that I'm hypermobile, which means my joints are so flexible that my bones can sometimes out of the socket. Only then did he believe me about the pain & prescribe physical therapy.

All that to say, maybe you should seek a 2nd opinion.

For now, take care!

Sickofbeingsick, I've finally got my long-overdue appointment with my gynecologist in 2 weeks. If she finds anything, or has any ideas or recommendations, I'll post.

I hate to say it, but every time I've had a male doctor, they've questioned my knowledge of my body. Even my current sports med doc. When I went to him complaining of excruciating shoulder pain, he said it was "probably just soreness from overuse or misuse." It wasn't until he sent me for an x-ray & found an impingement (the bones rubbed together in the socket) that he realized I wasn't just a crazy little lady. Upon further examination, he found a lot wrong with my shoulders & finally prescribed physical therapy. At one point, my male physical therapist asked my husband, whom I'd brought in to learn how to tape my shoulder, if he could talk me into quitting my sport of roller derby. My husband responded, "Why shouldn't she play? Have you met my wife? She's too tough not to." The PT never asked about it again....

All that to say, perhaps you should seek a 2nd opinion rather than waiting another year. Either way, I'll let you know what I learn on the 22nd. For now, take care -- to all of you!

I have to leave this message in hopes it might help someone. :D I know everyone is different and it could be many different things that are affecting all of us around our menstrual periods....but I have been struggling with this for over a year....and in the last 6 months my life took a dramatic turn for the worse. I don't know if all of the sicknesses I've had have been related, but I no longer get the horrible FLU/STREP symptoms before my period like I used to. I think it's from all the changes I made in the last year. I would give the advice to look into Celiac Disease (an adverse reation to gluten in food) to see if that could be causing your symptoms (causing malabsorption of nutrients and making you run down and sick.) And if you do not have Celiac Disease and are still searching for answers, try giving up gluten for a month to see if you feel better....I am also on a high dose of good probiotics and I think they help as well.

Just a suggestion...I wanted to share what I found out because I know how frustrated and concerned you probably all are. The road I have been down this year, I also want to say....if you have a doctor that makes you feel stupid, makes you feel like you are "overreacting or being a baby" GET RID OF THEM and get a new doctor!!! You know your body and you know when you're sick....do not listen to insensitive jerks when you are looking for help!!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know what I just came across.... Don't know if anyone has mentioned it already. It sounds just like symptoms for Endometriosis. I have always thought I had it because I would get cramps where I couldn't move; it even got to the point where I was throwing up from the pain. After all the suffering I went thru for years, since I was12, labor and natural childbirth was nothing for me. After having my second son, I went on birth control. Since I stopped birth control after 3 months, I have been getting flu-like symptoms every month right before my period and it lasts until my period is over. I had many different symptoms before and during birth control. I will tell you that birth control (NuvaRing) majorly helped with my overall mood! I was so much happier.

Sickofbeingsick: Saw my gyn last week. She said she'd never heard of anyone getting flu symptoms with her period & suggested I ask my GP about it. She suggested that maybe I have an underlying resp/lung disease like mono that's been left untreated. Mono? Really? Wouldn't my husband be sick all the time too? Seems like she's not gonna be a help. She did send me for a pelvic ultrasound, which I underwent today. Results in 2 days.

lisalisa0604: Hadn't thought of Celiac, but it's worth some research & talking to my GP about. I'm not one to jump on bandwagons, though & I'm rather sick of hearing gluten's to blame for every ailment on the planet. In NYC, it seems like I hear someone everyday talking about the evils of gluten. Next it's fiber....

guest (latest): Hadn't thought of endometriosis either. I'd never heard or read of a connection between endometriosis & sore throats & flu symptoms with PMS.

Like I said, awaiting ultrasound results. Who knows what it'll show? I'll keep y'all posted....

Hi, I am so relieved to know that I'm not crazy. I am 48 years old and for the past 3 years I have been praying every month that my period would just cease. Every month I get sick 2 weeks before my period with abdominal pain and pressure in my pelvic area, doctor says I feel ovulation. Then 1-2 days before my period I get the flu, this month it is horrible, severe joint and muscle aches, fever chills, sore throat, coughing, hot and cold sweats, headaches, my skin hurts to the touch. My blood work showed I have G6PD deficiency it's a form of anemia. My red blood count has been as low as 6.0 that's transfusion level but I got that under control now so it must be something else. I take plenty of vitamins and whole food supplements trying to boost my immune system nothing is working. Does anyone know what this is and what does the flu have to do with my monthly cycle.

I have flu like symptoms with my periods too. I thought I was going crazy and looked on the internet today for some answers. I see others are going through the same thing. Maybe we all have some sort of link?....I dunno. Would like for this to go away. Hubby doesn't understand and it's just me being sick again.
