Dutch media has splashed the news across its front pages about the gay gang luring their victims on the internet, drugging them and infecting them with the AIDS virus. These events raised questions over Dutch liberal sex culture.
The police arrested three seropositive homosexual men after their four victims, men aged 25 to 50, came forward and accused them of rape and premeditated bodily harm. The crime activities took place in the northern town of Groningen and two out of four people involved in the activities were arrested. A couple, aged 48 and 33, had confessed that these activities excited them and that they were looking forward to more people being infected with HIV, as this would lead to more unprotected sexual encounters. Unprotected encounters are pure, they stated. These two men face charges of rape and "premeditated severe assault" and are facing a maximum jail sentence of 16 years. They will not be charged with attempted murder "because of a Supreme Court ruling that found AIDS should no longer be seen as an inevitably fatal disease, but rather a chronic illness".
The police also arrested the third and the fourth suspect who were involved in the sex parties. Since the case was publicized, eight more victims came forward.
The three seropositive men invited gays to their private homosexual orgies and when they turned up, they were allegedly given ecstasy and GHB, leaving them helpless and, in some cases, with no memory of what happened. They raped the men and injected some with a mix of their contaminated blood.
The Holland, both gays and straights, are shocked by these events. Frank van Dalen, the president of a gay rights group called COC, said that it is known that gays organized orgies but that this was something else. The editor of the homosexual magazine Gaykrant called the acts “shameful, disgusting and terrifying”.
Health officials reported a rise in HIV infections in Groningen, The rise is not entirely explained by the orgies but it is thought that the part of the rise has been caused by them.
