Anyone have any tips for improving the number of pull ups one can do? I've tried negative sets and assisted pull-ups. I still can't get beyond 6 strick pull-ups in a single set. Don't know if anyone had other ideas on things I could try.

Vertical Knee Raises, I do 3 sets of ten.

Hang on a chin up bar, and bring the knees to the chest. Great for Ab work, too.

Try doing 50 reps no matter how many sets it takes you. Even if you have to do 25 sets of 2.

Have you got access to a gym? Try hitting the lat pulldown machine.

Lat pulldown - Great response! Focus on using your back muscles to pull you up instead of your biceps.

Is this a type of pull-up? If so, I'm not familiar with it. If it's a typo, then how many pull-ups are you trying to do in a set? Maybe concentrate on what PH said. Just get yourself to 50, and work from there.

Nah, it's a typo. I meant to write strict.
Thanks to everyone for the responses.

Lat pull down is an excellent machine for developing pull ups but concentrating on the biceps is important also. I'm actually pretty good at pull-ups for some reason even though I don't concentrate on them. My usual warm-up before lifting (and after running) is a set of 10 dips and 10 pull-ups. If I remember tomorrow morning I'll see how many pull-ups I can do and report back. Used to be 20 good ones, doubt if thats possible any more.

17 good pull-ups this morning after a short cooldown from a 20:10 3 miler.

Rob - That's 10 more than I can do. My back is my weakest area.

I don't even know why I'm good at them to be honest. I think I've got above average strength in biceps and shoulders for someone my size but I rarely do any exercises at all for the back.

If you're doing them from a dead hang, that's pretty darn good.

I don't pause at the bottom of each one, at least until the last couple. I stay in motion but I do straighten my arms out fully at the bottom.
