ok, I've been doing the lifting for over a year with great results. been in a slump lately (with everything for that matter) and to shake it up today, I did a few century sets for arms and back (100 reps total, lighter weight than normal) I did them in sets of 25, pausing between the sets. today was the first I really thought about how long I should rest between the sets. any thoughts?

I'll probably get ripped on for this, but I never rest between sets. I try to superset everything so that I can get done quicker. I only two days a week. That's all my schedule will allow. The quicker I'm on and off of the bench, the better.

I'll take the middle ground here. I, like PH, like to superset not so much for the time factor but for the double workout it gives your muscles. a 30 second rest or less is not really going to add much more time to your workout and it could save you from injury in the long run (just MHO). I don't time my rests, it's basically enough to catch my breath, shake out my arms or whatever if I need to, and then start over. What I normally do is superset opposing exercises for body parts, resting in between the supersets, i.e. a set of bicep curls followed immediately by a set of tricep extensions, then a rest, then a second superset, then rest, then third superset....etc......works better with free weights than machines. On the machines I take the briefest of rests between sets, especially if I am pyramiding....increasing the weight by one plate each set but doing less reps. By that third set, I'm dying......

That is what I do as well, except the time between exercises may vary due to changing weight, adjustments, water break, etc. Try to stay to a minute though.

I don't time them. I do the same thing as Genie.

About 15 deep breaths for me...that's how I count the time in between...

Now, for a lot of the people at my gym (Bally's Meat Market) the sequence goes like this:

Stretch-half assed at best
Look around to see who's looking at you
Look at a machine as if you are going to use it (females)
Walk to other end of gym shaking butt (female) or flexing, slapping chest (male)
Look around to see who's looking at you
Do a set...maybe, no more than 7 or so reps at best
Go get a drink from the fountain at other end of gym....repeat step 4
Repeat step 2
Repeat step 3
If you are lucky, hook up
If not, sigh and go home, having gotten a thorough cardio workout walking back and forth

I can ask someone how long their rests are if you'd like ;) ;)

I don't remember who told me to, but waaaay back when I began lifting seriously (3-4 times per week mandatory whether I run or not) someone on Kick! told me that I should always, without fail pause for about a minute between sets.

Since I don't like to wait, though, I do this: I go to an arms machine. I work it, baby. I go to a leg machine; ditto. Back, abs, etc. and then start over. That way I don't have to wait.

Genie, I laughed for about 2 minutes when I read your posts. :dance1:
