My grandpa is having some problems with sleeping and I have tried to help by giving diazepam, but it was to no effect. What should we do? He does not have any other problems; he is just fine, except for that sleeping part. So, what do you suggest? He is not that willing to see a doctor…

But that is exactly what must be done. You said that he is ok physically which means this could be related to the state of mind. Perhaps he is showing first signs of anxiety, maybe depression and perhaps there is really some physical condition that is not showing any symptoms so far. Medical examination is really needed; go now before the simple sleeping problem escalates in something really complicated.

Xanax always helped me sleep better. I would wake up and not be groggy in any way. It helped me turn my mind off when I went to bed, and just relaxed me in general. You could always also go the ambien route. It always put me to sleep, however if I didnt get like ten hours I would be groggy the next day. You could get him to try melatonin which is natural and already exists in the body. You could also try other over the counter sleep aids. But you need to try to coax him into going to the doctor because you really dont need to be on a controlled substance without being under a doc's supervision. And be sure to be aware of over medicating. You want to use the lowest strength to get the job done. If melatonin will work, he doesnt need to take prescription medicines because most of them are habit forming. But keep trying to get him to see a doc. Good luck, I know that dealing with older people can be a big hassle.
