my son has gynocamastia. insurance won't pay for the surgery. any serious effects if surgery isn't done ; longterm? heard that it can increase breast ca. risk in men ? CORRECT? WHAT ABOUT EMOTIONAL EFFECTS ?????

The emotional risk depends on a person, if they understand what is going on, the reason gynecomastia occurred, etc
You need to talk to your son and see what and how he feels about it. If gynecomastia developed due to obesity, it is probable that he would suffer some self-esteem problems but he would have these problems with obesity alone.
You didn’t mention what caused gynecomastia: low testerone production, increased estrogen production, a specific drug use, etc
In some cases, gynecomastia may go away if the culprit is eliminated, hormones regulated, or drugs disrupted. Like everything else, it is individual.
If gyneocmastia is caused by hormonal disorders, then the cancer risk is increased. Around 40% of the people with gynecomastia develop breast cancer but this is not the cause and the effect relationship. Breast cancer appears only because of hormonal imbalance just like gynecomastia did. (if). So, gynecomastia alone would not cause cancer and is not cancerous.

Hi - I have a 17 year old son who has this as well. He is very self concious about it. However in the past 7 months he has lost a lot of weight (dropped from size 107 pants to 97 which is 2 sizes here in australia - he is 6ft 4") and consequently lost fat around his breasts as well. they still do stick out more than most males but I wonder if that will reduce after puberty... how old is your son? It is an awful thing for guys and I believe insurance should pay for it just like they will pay for female breast reductions if it is causing medical trauma and mental trauma is just as if not more debilitating than physical.

All the best

my son has the same thing and i know a woman who had the same issue in wich the insurance did not pay for it. she said that the insurance claims they will pay for it if there is only untolerable pain involved. She spoke in front of a board for her insurance and asked what was there definition of pain. She had it approved by the board because she said pain comes in all sorts of shapes and forms and the mental embarassment is worse then any pain this could cause. So she used their termonology to the fullest, and won her coverage for the liposuction. it might be something you could try. She did not have to hire a lawyer and won.
