EC pills are quite effective; the earlier they are taken the more effective they are likely to be, but they are not 100% guaranteed.

"if you had sex a week before your next period or within a week of your last period you couldn't get pregnant" is rather misleading. It would be more accurate to say that "if you had sex a week before your next period or within a week of your last period start you are less likely to get pregnant". This is, however, a better guide for those actively seeking pregnancy.

  1. Unless you know when you ovulated, you don't know when your period will start. A period usually starts a fortnight after ovulation.
  2. For a normal 28-day cycle the previous period would likely be a fortnight before ovulation. That assumes the current cycle is going to conform to pattern.
  3. If you have sex a week after the end of a 5-day period you would likely be in your fertile days with a 28-day cycle.
  4. If you have sex a week after the start of a period with a 25-day cycle, it could well be in your fertile days.
  5. Some women have been known to have periods at the start of, and even (rarely) throughout, their pregnancy.
  6. Any time you have sex there is the possibility of pregnancy
