I had a bump on my forehead that was there because of a bad fall as a kid.  I went to a plastic surgeon who was supposed to be one of the best and he  said he could improve it by surgery.  I went under anestesia and had the surgery.  I think it looks worse now then before.  It is now uneven in that area and even more noticeable.  My advice is just accept it, you take a chance with surgery that it will look even worse.

I just had one checked by a plastic surgeon. As soon as he touched it, he wanted to get rid of it. He said he would be worried about it. I had it removed today. The procedure was a little unnerving, with the doctor having to cut it with a surgical chisel and hammer. He said it was too hard. Growth in the bone, but they are sending it to be biopsied, just to make sure is benign (I hope!).

I had chronic migrain headachs, constantly recorded an unusual high white blood cells count on several occassions (from visit to my GP) because of this growth. Did not know what to do until this morning. I am at Peace.

For this reason, I would like to thank  the owners of this website for assisting me (and others) find the answer to my long search  to my medical condition. I had this condition for about three(3) years,  Doctors i saw, paid no attention to it.I will take my notes (from this site) to see the Doctor for a guided diagnosis and arrange CT Scan and hopefully find a Doctor (in Papua New Guinea) capable of removing this growth.

Thank you.....For Life.....

Glad I'm not alone. I noticed mine a year ago.....is bigger now. Dermatologist don't think is a tumor. I was getting head aches....got an MRI and came out normal. I noticed that in the morning feels more flat but later on during the day is very bumpy. I didn't use to feel anything now I feel like is trying to go either into or through my frontal skull.

I had a lump on my forehead and had it removed by a dermitologist. It wasn't anything under the skin but rather crystalization of the skin. He removed the hard skin and stiched it up - can't even notice. He did say it may return and it has -- slightly beside the previous location. Tests on the skin came back negative. the doctor said it is common if i had tramua in the area. Another possible source of crystilzation has to do with lung desease - a scan ruled this out. I probably won't remove the new lump unless it gets bigger.

Endoscopic forehead osteoma removal is done on an outpatient basis. Due to Dr. Shah's technique of selectively blocking nerves with local anesthesia, most patients only need minimal anesthetic, allowing for a relatively pain free experience. Many patients are able to return to work either the next day or in a few days.

Osteoma before removal by Dr. Shah (left) and after removal (right)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dr. Shah uses staples in my scalp?
No, Dr. Shah believes staples provide an inferior result and places individual sutures to reapproximate the scalp. This makes the incision in the scalp very difficult to see or feel.
Does insurance cover this procedure?
Typically insurance does not cover osteoma removal. However, if there is suspicion that the bony growth is not a benign lesion, than insurance may cover this procedure.
How much does this procedure cost?
The cost varies depending on the size and location of the osteoma, as well as the shape of the hairline.
When can I wash my hair after the procedure?
One day after the procedure
When can I return to work?
Most patients are able to return to work in a day but it varies depending on the type of work (no heavy lifting)
What are some of the risks of the procedure?
Risks include alopecia (loss of hair), sensation issues, step off deformity (scar is not aligned properly). Dr. Shah has not experienced any of these issues in endoscopic osteoma removal.

Can I chose my anesthesia?
Some patients chose local anesthesia, but most prefer a mild relaxing medication during my procedure.

How does Dr. Shah make the bone so smooth?
He uses a variety of instruments to reshape the area then make sure it is smooth to touch and visually.
Can osteomas come back?
Theoretically, an osteoma can come back but none of Dr. Shah's patients have experienced this.

Can Dr. Shah change the shape of my forehead?
Yes, for more information see Forehead Contouring.
Can I leave the Chicago area on the next day?
Many patients are able to fly out on the next day.
Why don't other surgeons use this technique?
Dr. Shah is an innovator in the field and has developed a new approach to forehead osteotomas. In doing so he has helped modified several instruments so that he can approach the osteoma from a narrower incision with the use of narrow, thin endoscopes. This allows him visualization and access through a tiny incision.

I'm 17, and like everyone else on this forum, I have the same hard lump. I have it on both sides (although one side is more prominent than the other). After scrolling through other replies, I've come to the conclusion that previous head injury seems to be a common theme. Most people have reported it to be in the area of the bump, but for me all of my injuries have been on the back of my head. I had 6 concussions when I was 12, but again none of them were to the front of my head. I've seen 2 doctors about it and it isn't a cyst. Hopefully someone at a research university finds this forum and gives us some results!

I had a bad fall about 6 years ago and have the same bump that you describe. I'm also growing two more just where I hit my head on pavement. After reading these reports from people with forehead bumps, I'm going to simply try to ignore them.

I am 13 years old, I also have a hard lump on the centre of my (upper) forehead, it is quite small but often noticable when light shins directly on it. I have had it since I was a baby (not sure if I was born with it, based on what my older brother says and the pictures I have, It wasnt there during birth but when I fell on my head when I was young) It doesnt hurt, no headaches, no pains. I lack knowledge of why it is still present to this day, but I am almost sure to dismiss it as something that is not a serious issue. I regret not pushing it in when was "mushy" but I have began using my knuckles and walls to push it in, but due to Wolf's Law, It might grow stronger and/or bigger... oh yeah, It might have grown, but it doesnt grow at this age. I am hoping for my skull to overlap it when I become older

Hi everybody !

If the lump is growing slow, has stayed almost similar for couple of years, and if it feels hard, and is attached firmly to the bone ( like a part of the bone), and you can move your skin freely around it, and it doesn't hurt, it doesn't bleed or have any colour change, it could a homoplastic osteoma (hard osteama, growing on the bone) which is generally treated only, if it becomes a problem.
