I have the sane thing on my forehead for many years. It is getting bigger and I'm having terrible headaches. I don't want the operation to remove it at my age. I feel like a freak. I hardly go anywhere, people stare at me. Good luck to you. Mary Ann

Sorry to hear that many of you have the same problem that I do. I have had a hard bump on the right side of my forehead for five years now. I noticed that it has gotten bigger so I decided to go to my dermatologist. He opened up the area thinking it was a cyst , but to his surprised it was bone. He had to remove muscle and then file down the bone. This was not a happy time for me. He stitched me up and told me that his nurse that works with him has the same thing . He said hers is big and she has to go to a hospital in Philadelphia, PA to have surgery on it. They would have to drill the bone out. I asked him if mine will grow back and he said it might. He told me when I was leaving the office if I noticed that it was growing back then I would need a cat scan and then go to Philadelphia to have it drilled out. Yeah , real fun! Ps: not cancerous

Hi everyone I had this on and off for a few years and asked my doctor at the last appointment. He said it is likely from stress. Not sure if it is the same as everyone else--bump on my forehead (right, just below hair line) that seems not quite solid but still sturdy enough that it won't be getting popped or anything. It is also very dry.

I have had a lump on forehead for about 3 years hardly noticeable but to me but last 6 months getting bigger and people commenting. Went GP who did x ray stated there is a foreign object 3mm in soft tissue and I would have to pay to have removed. Gave me name of someone in Spire I went to see him for price he stated it was Bonyexostosis of frontal bone. It will continue to grow so awaiting price to remove he said local anaesthetic open up and chisel it off

Hy. I'm a female,25 with that problem as well...same spot too...my doctor took me for scan...said what uv been told and suggested we remove it.because it's been bothering me decided to..in the operation room he opened it and realized it's something else he couldn't just remove, it's muscle growing on my forehead not just fat gland (it's hard, mehen u press on it it moves around, wasn't born with with it started growing 4years bk, it's pronounced now) so ya he couldn't remove the lump..stitched me up and said he gt bk to me. Now that I have a scar I feel even worse about it. *desparate

Correctly termed, it's an osteoma.  I like the term exostosis as well, as we have digit exostosis which is a osteophyte from the tip of one's finger or toe.  I'm sure one can debate whether it should be call an osteoma or an exostosis, it's still the same thing.

There's a good video on youtube by Dr. Phillip Miller, just google his name and Frontal Bone Osteoma Removal.

Most insurance won't cover it.  General anesthesia in surg center is about $5,000-$7,000; cost of procedure, couple of thousand.

I do have to advise that risk of severing a nerve is there, so you might be left with an area of anesthesia on forehead and scalp.  Also, there is that risk of unsightly scar on forehead, as well as recurrence.
