I have a Tailor's bunion that was painful but now I have a golf ball size bursa sac around it. I can't wear any shoes and exercising is becoming very difficult. My Orthopeudic doctor recommended therapy and orthotics. Nothing has helped and now 2 months later, it's worse. I have had foot surgeries before and I KNOW that the pain and the hassle are always more than anticipated. But my son is getting married in 4 months and I want to be able to participate without either pain or a boot. So, I think I am going to go for the surgery. I just don't know if the healing process is any different between a podiatrist or an orthopedic surgeon. Any difference? Any advice for something near Greensboro, NC?

Today is day 5 from my Taylor's bunion I only took 4 pain killers the whole time and that was more so I could sleep on the second day I've had screws and a plate to straighten my toes so it's just a bit boring walking with crutches and a boot but pain wise nothing with it so I'm glad I had it done ,lynn

As a student I did it over the summer and it took about a month. I had no options except for surgery, so I would plan to be out of commission for at least a month if surgery is your last choice.

Any medication questions, ask your Dr. If you have no access to an M.D., call your local pharmacy & ask to speak to the pharmacist. They have vast knowledge on medications, dosing, & side effects. Without a medical license, people can't & shouldn't give advice on medications & dosing. Good luck!

I once had an ankle arthroscopy by a Podiatrist. It truly was the biggest mistake of my life! Now, with nerve damage , if I had to do it over, I would choose an Orthopedic Surgeon over a Podiatrist any day. Definitely check their credentials before proceeding, no matter what you decide to do!!!

Do it while you're young! I'm 18, and I had my tailors bunion fixed, and it was rough at first, but now, I'm so glad I did it! I'm into theatre, so dancing and wearing the shoes required for certain shows would have me in tears sometimes because the pain was so bad, but now I'm able to run, dance, and do so much more without any pain! With my surgery, they cut into my bone, realigned it, and then pinned it. I was in a boot for 9 weeks, and 8 out of the 9 I couldn't bear weight on it. That was probably the hardest part.

What was your outcome? Did you ever heal?

I had both (Tailors Bunions) done at once too when I was mid-twenties, because I was working a lot as a young lawyer and I knew I did not have time to do one with recovery time and later the other. Back then I had to be in a wheelchair to do both at once (didn't have the technology I guess) , so I had to move in with parents for a little while and then even go back to work in wheelchair. Looking back, I had no choice (they hurt and needed to be fixed) and it was rough for a little while but I am 51 now and I have run 30 miles per week on those feet since I recovered from Tailors Buinon surgery 25 years ago.. (I just had big toe "Austin Bunionectomy" on left foot 2 weeks ago and am amazed at how much the technology has improved. Still it is always inconvenient and painful to have bones in your feet cut etc. but I look at big picture, fixing the problem and then my life-improved (for me running and walking without pain.) Good luck!
