The HIDA scan alone is a joke. Any good medical journal will tell you that a negative result (a result indicating some malfunction of the bile flow) from a HIDA scan does not necessarilly mean your gallbladder must be removed. The results of the HIDA test along with other symptoms like extreme pain, association with food connsumption, etc. is a better basis on which to make such a decision. However, a negative result and a bad or greedy doctor will definately result in a removal of your gall bladder. In my opinion, that is exactly the case for Dr. Albert McDowell and Annette Elbert of Fort Worth, Texas. Despite repeatedly specifying i had no major pain just a dull ache in my back, they both insisted i have my gall bladder removed based soley on the HIDA result (my ultrasound came back absolutely fine).
Now that my gall bladder has been removed, my digestive system is in complete chaos and the dull ache that both doctors based their "expert" is still occasionally there...apparently it's nothing more than a pulled muscle. Again, in my opinion, do not get any invasive procedure unless you are in extreme pain and by all means, avoid the doctors mentioned above.
