Today is 6/17/18. I have been taking gabapentin/neurontin for over 20 years & have gained over 50 lbs. I have NOT been able to take it off in all the years that I have been taking it. I have been on a perpetual diet all these years & still am. I finally, in the last year, lost 20 lbs.(over a period of 6 months) but am at a stand still. I am on Weight Watchers. Would LOVE any suggestions that anyone else may have about their dealings with trying to lose weight while on gabapentin/neurontin. BTW, I HAVE talked to my doctor & she just says to continue on my WWatchers plan & continue exercising.....but REALLY? 20 lbs in 6 months!!!! That's IT!!!???

Or we have talked to the Doctor and the Doctor does not care about side effects of the meds people may just want to connect with others that have the same issues and maybe what has helped with their side effects may help them just because we are not doctors does not mean we cant think!

Tramadol will help with weight loss due to gabas weight gain. Also it is normal to feel like c**p when you firsf use it. Break 50mg pill in half n start with it slowly increasing to 2-3 times a day. Do not use it and drive for the first month. Wait till tour body gets use to it comfortably enough to take during the day. Your welcome

I took this medicine for a month and I gained 7 pds it went straight to my stomach. Made me look pregnant still getting stressed from the weight gain. I stoped the medicine, and just worked out but still nothing. So I changed my eating habits, no red meat, no carbs, no sugars, no bread. So basically spinach, baked salmon, chicken, shrimp, fruits, all veggies. I also started taking lipo shots in my stomach which are cheap here in AZ 15 dollars a shot. Working out 4 days a week. I lost 5 pds so far and I’m feeling back normal.

Hi, may I ask what your diet consumes of and if you are on any other meds? I'm on so many meds and am very active, don't always eat right, but I have gained about 60lbs being on gabapantin, 1800mg a day, I'm thinking maybe it's the combination of all my meds making me gain weight. I'm thinking about starting the metro diet pills and completely stop all starches, no bread, no noodles, no cheese, just chicken,low-fat turkey meat, tons of veggies, tons of salads, kitos to you girl for not gaining weight like all of us are on it, you are the first person that I've ever heard that ever lost weight being on this poison of a drug just to help us get through the day without pain.

Cymbalta worked great and no weight gain but had to stop due to horrific headaches. Good luck hope you don't have that side effect!

My doctor increased my Cymbalta dose from 60mg to 90mg and I had an adverse reaction. I became more depressed and had severe mood swings. She brought my dose back down to 30mg and prescribed Well but din XL 300mg. It helped tremendously. Good luck!

I felt I better warn y ou. I was out neurotic several years for insomnia. Worked great for awhile and then another med (seriqui l) was added. It slowly stopped working so they hoped the strengths. Now I've been to get another doctor and he said I should have given these meds for slerp. He won't even treat me until I'm off them. I did find with weight until they kept hoping dosages. No I'm gained about 35 lbs since summer and feel like a fat cow.
My regular doctor is helping me get off this measured to add another med due to withdrawn and my blood pressure is way high and pulse rate dangerous. When he told me this was going to be a hard withdrawal he wasn't joking. I have shook, froze and can't stand for long.

So P LEASE make sure you need this before you get started down this crazy road. You may feel refreashe d now but it may lead to a nightmare down the road. I am being tapered and I'm day 6 and the shakes are back.

The gabapentin also makes sleep wonderful for me. I take 600 a day and have noticed weight gain. The dr increased it to 900 and may go more because I have scoliosis which causes back pain. I am 5.2 and did weigh 120, already I am 126. I am trying to find out if it actually does cause weight gain or it's my fault. lol

Gabapentin is weird drug. I have been grossly underweight my whole life. I have been taking GP for years but as a SECONDARY pain Rx to Hydrocodone. My doctor suddenly pulled me off HC. And my pain zoomed. So I started taking it at higher doses at BT (I used to take 600mg a day at night, then increased it to 1200/d/BT.) when I had excruciating cramps in my foot, I would take 2400 or more in a few hours. It works so I stayed on 1200. Then two months ago, I was weighed in Drs. Office. I was 123 lbs or almsot 20 lbs more than my avg wt. Then this month, I gained MORE. I have tried to gain weight my whole life and ZIP. Its got to be GP plus no exercise (CV). But I am not going to take it for pain daily which is bad b/c these pain "attacks" are agony. So just to share.

If your weight gain isn't significant, don't worry too much. But if you gained 20+ lbs over few months, you need to start being more active. If you are experiencing pain, just take a walk. If that is boring for you, get a dog and go to walk with it. Start exercising or doing yoga, whatever make you move from your chair. The key factor in losing weight is to combine healthy eating and somewhat active lifestyle. When you do only one part of this, you won't prevent weight gain. All in all, this drug has many benefits, so you should do whatever is in your power to adjust your lifestyle.

I had a back unjury last year and was put on 3600mg daily for that. I have piled on the pounds!! On research I have discovered that gabapentin slows down your metabolism.. so I am now taking sea kelp to kick it back into touch! I have had great success with sea kelp before..so I am really hoping it works again for me. :)
